Well, Terry already beat me to posting, but I thought I would start my own since I have the video. We had no idea if were going to run the trail or not....the weather report was 60% chance of rain with 80% in the aftenoon. Upon meeting up with the other guys we decided to take our chances....and I was super glad that we did. The rain stopped as soon as we aired down the tires and we didn't see it again until we drove home up I25. It was a perfect day.

I will say that I managed to miss the new fender.....but I took out a lot of other stuff right around it.

This unexpected wheelie at the start of Patriot:
http://www.projectxj.com/images/trail.runs/10.09.05-indy/images/IMG_6885.jpg

Resulted in this:
http://www.projectxj.com/images/trail.runs/10.09.05-indy/images/IMG_6891.jpg

It hit the mirror, door, pushed the A pillar into the cage, rain gutter, and smashed the windshield....which sucked cause there was a ton of glass inside. :(

I still had a really good time though. It was a good crew to wheel with....and we didn't have any major breakdowns.

Terry just touched his fender and mirror on this one:

Good tire foldage:

Not the most comfortable place I've ever been:

Everything was very smooth for both of us on all of the drops:

Not sure what the plan is. It just sucks cause I don't think a new windshield will fit in it anymore. I'm going to get an estimate and see what it looks like.....if it's out of control....then I'll figure out a way to fix it myself and continue to beat on it until it's time for the top to come off. ;)

What do each of your XJ's have as far as suspension, tire size, lockers etc? That silver Jeep looks like it did awesome but it doesn't look big at all - I guess that long wheel base really helps! What would you say is a requirement of that trail as far as a Jeep goes?

thanks... (says the owner of the silver jeep).
it pretty much goes where i ask it to, though not always on the first attempt. ;)

we're all setup kinda similarly, though i'm the small rig of the bunch (as usual). i think brian and i are both sitting around 6" and both running the T&T longarm setup. chris might be a little taller and runs the RE long arms. he and brian are both running 35s to my 34s, but brian runs 13.50s, chris 12.50s and mine are closer to 11s (metric). sometimes i think being narrower (both axle and tire) really helps, and sometimes not so much. brian is running fullsize axles (44 and 9") so w/ the tires he by far has the widest stance; i'm pretty sure chris is running a 44 up front and 60 in the rear (both narrowed); i'm happy for now w/ my HP30 up front and XJ 44 out back. we're all geared and locked (spool, electrac, or ARB).

for that trail i think the biggest thing (if you're not running 40s) is armor, followed by lockers front and rear-- those are some pretty big rocks and steep ledges.

i was just glad to get through w/o needing a tug, and relatively damage-free (kissed the paint in a couple of spots and lost my tear-away rear flares).

fun trail for sure.

The wheelbase and wide stance definitely helped on the drops, but I'm sure there are a ton of people here with similar setups to yours that can give you more input than either of us could. If you're going to go down there, be sure to hook up with the right people so they can show you the lines. :)

http://www.projectxj.com/images/trail.runs/10.09.05-indy/images/IMG_6899.jpgI'm just curious how this jeep was equipped? I want to run the trail, but I've heard it's pretty rough. I'm running about 5" of lift, 3" drivetrain lift and 33" tires on a '97 4runner. Can I do it?

That XJ has 6" lift and ~34" tires....locked f/r.....with plenty of armor.

I would say that you could run down and back up liberty, but you may have troubles in a couple of places. I would avoid dropping in on the main part of the trail....it would be pretty tippy in an IFS 4runner.

Probably true! Why's the railing there? It seems like it would cause more damage than good, but maybe it's just that tippy that you could easily lay it on it's side. I don't know, but I can't wait to make a run down there. It looks like a great time.

The railing is there to keep people on the trail. They are all over that trail and I think they serve their purpose well.

I hate that railing every time I drop in there, but I realize it's there for a reason and if I'm not willing to accept the damage from that....then I shouldn't drop in....cause the rest of the trail only gets worse.

Great video and pics Brian. Nice body damage; at least you didn't touch that shiny new fender. :poke: Now you're truly ready for Billings.

I've GOT to come run those trails.

P.S. In your opinion, is it harder or easier than BV Carnage?

fatwreck

The portion of the trail that we ran (Liberty) is easier than BV Carnage. However, Patriot is close.....people will have differing opinions on this one. I think Patriot is harder.....well, at least the exit is for sure.

All other pic's I have seen have the part you are "dropping into" as the exit and where everyone rolls. Are they running it "backwards" (no not in reverse....lol.) or were you guys? That is great video, thanks a bunch for posting it; my co-workers enjoyed it as well.

There was a thread here not so long ago about the hardest trails in the state and Carnage, BV and Indy were on there with most saying Indy is harder. Before I started on Carnage, BV A pal of mine (Dennis from Warn winches, with the Lime Green CJ-7 in the ads) tells me that I would have trouble running Billings (which I had heard was NOT as hard as C,BV)... Then half way thru Carnage he comes up to me and says "If you can do this you will have NO troubles with Billings" saying that he now (then) thought Carnage, BV was a good bit harder than Billings. All the other guys on that trip (July '05) said that is the hardest they have seen it there (Carnage), all of which have ran it several times, that was my first time on it. After that they went and ran Topless, Calamity and Die Trying in Montrose and said that Carnage BV was the hardest of all those.

So any way I want to run Billings to know for my self. And now would like to run Indy... but the stories I have heard of the exit (your entrance) have been brutal stories and have seen a bunch of pic's & vid's of roll overs there. I'll tell ya one thing for sure... those XJ's can seriously wheel, when I was on 34's I was doing Bill Moore and the like thinking I was cool....lol.

We definitely dropped in the the entrance. This is the exit....they both have rails, but they are very different. ;)

I know a lot of guys (when there isn't traffic)....run it to the exit and then turn around and go out the area we dropped into....just because it is fun.

Ah good ol dennis, yeah billings in the snow kicked his purty little arse :D It started out simple enought, then the snow started flying and that's when he started taking more pulls than cheech and chong with his wet 35" krawlers at 12psi

if you haven't been there then i could see how (some) photos of the entrance and exit (patriot) look similar-- big ledges w/ rails. once you've been there, there is no mistaking those *cliffs* at the exit!

unless, like brian observes, some people are running it backwards...

Brian sorry I could not make it Sunday with you guys. The pics and video turned out awesome! A few quesitons.

From the looks of this pic it seems like the vehicle is sliding along the gate. How much damage did the gate do to this rig?

http://www.projectxj.com/images/trail.runs/10.09.05-indy/images/IMG_6845.jpg
Did you guys make the exit or did you turn around and run the trail backwards? Is there a winch point to help out at the exit? I agree those are some serious walls! :hail:

actually (luckily) i wasn't really moving at that point. that picture makes it look pretty bad. as it was, i just barely kissed the rail momentarily resulting in a slight scratch in my fender and A-pillar. thanfully the late-model XJ mirrors fold in. ;)

we ran the trail out via liberty, so yes we made that exit (not patriot). the entire run was winch-free (i think brian was secretly bummed he didn't get to try out his new winch). :)

Awesome, thanks for squaring that away for me guys. Yes when you look at those pic's together it does seem to be a huge difference :D . That exit looks nothing short of brutal.

Wally... yes good 'ole Dennis, thanks for the ammo I'm going to give him some serious business about this one....lol. We tried to get him to do Carnage, BV and he wouldnd even think about it....lol. How late in the year does it get out there before the snow sets in? Sure would like to talk you into a tour  .

Dan, I think Dennis was worried about his jeep not being up for C BV. He said something like he had just run some tough trails and didn't know if anything was going to bust on him?? Those are some great shots of him in his Lime Green 7.. We need to get him to put his Scrambler back together before next year!

Nice Video! Thanks for posting!
