Come this September 11th be sure you understand the correct meaning of the day, officially designated as, Patriot Day

Public Law 107-89, enacted December 18, 2001, amended Title 36, United States Code, to designate September 11 as Patriot Day. Not to be confused with "Patriot's Day," a holiday observed in remembrance of the Battle of Lexington, which sparked the American Revolutionary War.

Patriot's Day is on April 19. It commemorates the infamous "shot heard round the world," during the Battle of Lexington, which occurred on April 19, 1775, and sparked the American Revolutionary War. Although rarely observed, it is still a nationally recognized holiday.

Patriot Day, designated on September 11, is not a holiday, nor a day for backyard barbecues and joyous celebration. It is a day of remembrance. A day dedicated to remembering the hijackings of United Airlines Flights 175 and 93, and American Airlines Flights 11 and 77. The hijackings occurred on September 11, 2001, and led to the deadliest terrorist attacks ever launched against the United States. These attacks killed thousands of innocent people and caused America to change its view regarding security, travel and America's readiness to defend itself against terrorist attacks.

According to Public Law 107-89, Patriot Day is to be remembered through appropriate activates by state and local governments and the people of the United States. These activities include displaying the American flag at half-staff and observing a moment of silence in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States on the historic September day.

Equally important to remember is the global reach of those attacks. The world-over felt the effects of those devastating attacks on democracy and freedom. Many lives, from many nations, were lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the pentagon outside Washington, D.C.. For many, this Patriot Day will be more than a day for Americans to remember, rather; it will be an international day of remembrance for all people to pause and remember the dastardly deeds of the terrorist, the heroic actions of Americans and the senseless loss of life that occurred on September 11, 2001. -- Eugene Isaac (Originally produced in Sergeant's Magazine)

To remember those fallen on this first anniversary of the cowardice attack on our freedom I am requesting each and every member of CO4X4 to join me in a moment of silence on 9/11 with not posting to the BB, not composing or answering email, not calling or answering the phones, etc. Please show your sincere respect during this most somber observance and remembrance.

Also to observe this tragic event please see this thread: Small gesture for 9/11 (http://www.colorado4x4.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=000810)

Together we stand, divided we fall!

Is there a designated time for the moment? Is this moment different for each time zone?

Here is the time line from CNN.com

8:45 a.m.: American Airlines Flight 11, crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center.

9:03 a.m.: United Airlines Flight 175, crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center.

9:43 a.m.: American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.

10:05 a.m.: The south tower of the World Trade Center collapses, plummeting into the streets below.

10:10 a.m.: A portion of the Pentagon collapses.

10:10 a.m.: United Airlines Flight 93 crashes in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, southeast of Pittsburgh.

10:28 a.m.: The World Trade Center's north tower collapses from the top down.

All times are EDT

I don't think it's so much a specific time or amount of time. We should all take what ever we need to remember our fallen Americans' on this solemn day.

Personally I think the BB should be closed from 6:45am through 8:28am Mountain Time.

Sounds good to me. Thanks Bob for posting that letter. It speaks volumes to the attitude not only we individually should take to that day, but the nation as a whole. graemlins/old_glory.gif

Thanks, Bob.

I was being a little complacent about my personal observance of the day. Thank you for reminding me how important this is. You will soon see the flag under my name for all of September and I will be priviledged to join you in the "moment of silence" by not posting on the board during those times.

Close the site if you want but I doubt it will be necessary. I'm sure everyone who reads this thread will comply. I won't even turn the 'puter on that day. Some things are more important to me than internet forums, even the one I moderate.

My flag will be flying high, as yours should, unless President Bush asks for them to be at 1/2 staff.

One quick point that really bugs me. If you fly a flag on your rig, or car, or anywhere take it down at night. If you fly the flag at night keep it lit up per flag ettiquite rules. Its disrespectful to fly the flag in darkness, even if its in your garage or parked for the night.

Bob, I too will remember 9/11 as you've requested. I suggest you leave the board online . . . what good is a remembrance if everyone is forced into silence?

Another way to remember 9/11 is to donate blood. If you remember, blood donor centers around the country were flooded with people trying to help out the 9/11 victims.

That gesture was touching, but what's really needed are donors who will donate regularly every 60 days. If more people did that, the country would always be prepared for any catastrophe such as 9/11.

I already have an appointment at Memorial Hospital Blood Bank for 2 pm, Sep 11. If you want to meet a great bunch of ladies, call and make yourself an appointment. Do it regularly, you'll be the hero who saved someone's life every two months!

Dave.

The closing of the board is voluntary. You choose to "close" it by not spending your time on your computer surfing the web, answerring emails, etc. when we as a nation should spend the day reflecting and strengthening each other.

Amen Matt, show the proper respect to old glory. She's been with all of us through good and bad, for longer than anyone of us has been around and has ALWAYS been there and WILL continue to stand watch over us all.

On Sept 11 the flag is to be flown at half staff from sunrise until sunset. When you do this take the flag all of the way up the staff and then lower it to half staff.

I'm a little late posting this, but this board will be closed on Patriot Day. It's a day of remembrance... 4x4 talk can wait a day. graemlins/old_glory.gif graemlins/flagribbon.gif graemlins/old_glory.gif

Eric,

Not sure if you'll get this message, but it doesn't seem as though the board is closed...there are still new topics appearing.
