This probably wont work, but if done right it could.
Im thinking a database of people that have specialty tools, that might be able to loan or rent between ourselves, or allow their use at their home, or something along these lines,, I have a lot of tools, but occasionally i find that I have need of something I dont have, or occasionally loan my stuff out, as long as I at least have a passing familiarity with the person wanting to use mine,, for example, I have a model3 bender, but only a 2 inch die set,, while joe blow has a 1,75 die and maybe needs to borrow a mig. ya see where i am going with this??
thanks Clyde

Not trying to rain on your parade, but people who abuse tools and don't immediately make it right cause broken friendships in a hurry. To me tools are like money, either can ruin a friendship in a hurry.
But it sounds like it would be at the discretion of the lender, some lenders might want a deposit or something......I guess it could work. I wouldn't likely participate, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

I think it could work - I was thinking of this - you post up if you need a tool and if someone has and is willing to let you use/rent it they let you know. I do agree with TTBlows though - nothing pisses me of more than someone borrowing a tool then returning it in worse condition than when I loaned it to them.

Admittedly, I am leery of lending tools too, there would have to be some knowledge of the person, But there is a core group here that seems to be fairly well known to each other, and there are people here that I have never met, yet would not have a problem lending to, on the other hand there are some that I would notlend to, without a deposit equal to the value of the tool, and I would understand if someone asked a deposit of me, my thinking on this, it would still be better than having to buy a tool that I really only need the one time, and that when I was done, I would have my funds back..... I suppose its all just wishful thinking on my part, but it would be great if we could get something like this together, perhaps limit it to supporting members, people that have shown a little commitment to being in our little community here... thanks for your thoughts on this, and i welcome any other thoughts anyone cares to post..

I think it could work as long as there was some sort of deposit that is agreed uppon by the group of people. Anything from $$ to possibly letting them hold onto something of similar value or whatever seems fair. I also think that the buyer seller feedback could be converted into a buyer seller renter feedback. I know if I had any tools at all that I were to lend out I would make sure they have no bad posts in the feedback section. And if someone doesnt return a tool, or returns it in a worse condition, then I would be a little afraid to purchase ANYTHING from them. If they treat your tools like crap, what kinda crap is their own equipment your about to buy in?? Good Idea, hope it works. Brandon

Problem is, have you ever seen some one use a tool thats not theirs? Flat out most of the time there is no respect. I can remember paying $$$ for my electric impact. Then watching one of my jack ass friends toss it under the truck to another guy, 3 ft through the air, 3 ft sliding across the pavement.
Its opening a huge can of worms.

I can appreciate that, seen it before. Some people don't think, yet thats how some people take care of their tools, weather they paid for them or not. There are some people that meticulously clean and put away all tools in their rightful spot every day, and there are others that just toss the greasy ones along with the rest into a pile.

I don't think it will work that well, but I just don't like the idea of borrowing someone elses stuff, or vice versa. I you need the tool once, most likely you will need it again, and the second time it will be midnight hours from anywhere (you get the point).

What if Colorado4X4 created a tool library?
The specific tool would be kept at the donors home, checked out and returned to that donors house. A nominal "check out" fee would be assessed for loaning the tool. This fee and transaction between loaner and "librarian" of the tool would be kept on this forum for all to see and oversee for proper ettiquete.
A selected few "Godfathers" would be chosen by members of Colorado4X4, to make final calls on certain bad situations. These "Godfathers" of the library would oversee proper use of the moneys collected. These moneys to be used for cost of repairing the tool and or replacement, usage, depending on the amount of times the tool gets replaced the tool could also get renewed, of course these are all items that can be changed as time goes on.
There are many people that are honest and would make good on loaning tools. Those that don't, well they will get found out and get dimed dropped on every chance we can, including full names!
One must set boundaries for others or else they will throw yours stuff around, leave your stuff in bad shape upon return, etc. Those type of people are the jack@$$es of the world and don't care about your stuff, no matter if you think they are a friend or not. They also are bad choice of freinds, I heard once, "Tell my who your friends are and I will tell you who YOU are," Very true.
Complicate I know but it seems that this site does have a core group that is diehard about what they know, do, and it's comradery, and is able to pull this off.

That would make the board responsible for the tools and running of this process. Eric is not going to be interested in that.

Don't forget, many stores like NAPA and Autozone have a "Loan a tool" program of some sort. Basically you pay for the tool, then they give you your deposit back when you return it. Obviously they don't have a huge selection, but they do have a bunch of basic stuff.
It's an interesting idea, but I doubt the board admins want to organize & manage something like this.

Try the yellow pages. Some of the rental places have welders. If you can bring the project to my house I'll do it for a small fee.

A tool pool will work with a group of people you know well. I personally do not loan any tools to anyone who does not own tools themselves. I figure if the person has and uses them they will treat yours with respect and not loose or damage them. Those who have not invested in their own tools probably will not know how to use them and will not respect their value to you.
This reminds me of a tip I have for people hiring a contractor to do something. Never hire a contractor with new tools.

Im broke, haha, but I have an almost complete shop. You can rent my space for $20 an hour plus consumables. Full use of my tools, but I have to be there unless you give me about a $5000 deposit.
