So I got a new toy.... 1956 Tucker Sno-cat 443.

Seats 8, if you like your friends you could fit 10. Got a Dodge flathead I-6 gas engine, 4x4, 4 track. Needs some TLC but does work. Has some rust on the pontoons and tracks, but body is aluminum and in good (enough) shape.
I plan to use it for BC skiing and generally ****in around in the snow, since that's what I do. I'm going to fix up the interior (make it nice), but not do a complete restoration. I want to build it to meet my needs, not necessarily the needs of some collector.

So far I'm in love with it. :)

Are there any limits on where this can be used? Same as a snowmobile? Must you stay on roads/trails?

That looks like a ridiculous amount of fun, both to drive and work on.

Tell me, is this a cheaper route to go then, say buying an older 7 passenger SUV for $5k and putting $15k mattracks on it?

There is something cool about these sno-cats, and if I end up in a place with lots of snow, I'd certainly love something to have. I'd love to have a cabin way back in the woods and *need* one of these to access said cabin in the winter. This is cool, but COG seems very high.

I dunno. I'm skeptical of vehicles with aftermarket tracks... It seems to me that they don't do well in the Colorado (continental) snow pack.. Too much powder and they sink and get stuck.. whereas in a Maritime snowpack they may be ok..

Also the sno-cat (professionally manufactured) has super low ground PSI. (I believe my sno-cat is 0.5psi) and I wonder if an SUV with Mattracks would have a properly displaced weight.

Just sold for under $10k. Mightly tempting!
