Picked up an 82 Kawi GPz 550 for a daily commuter and resto mod project. It's in decent shape, 22k miles. Everything works, recent maintenance. Paint is black w gold.flake. :) I'm gonna clean her up re paint a couple things. Chop the fairing for round headlight, bar end mirrors, update the blinkers, new taillight, seat, etc. Brakes are good suspension is tight. It's a good rider, I've been commuting on it for a couple da
he only thing that hasn't worked is the seat latch, I was gonna just cut the rack off it but then I saw I can get a few
$ s on eBay....

Gonna hit tys recycle this weekend and see what I can find local for some parts. Going for a headlight.

Feel like I'm in an amine film riding it haha. Could see ken or rycu from street fighter riding it... :)

Looks great, those old UJMs are awesome bikes!

Please, please, please DON'T turn it into a "bobber." So many half-assed "bobbers" on CL, it just breaks my heart to see these hack jobs done on great old bikes. :(

Back in '05 I went to Daytona with a friend of mine from my Army days. His dad lives in Daytona beach and my friend goes back every year for Bike Week. When we got there, his dad opened his garage to reveal his collection: A VFR 800, a V-max, a DR-350SE dual sport, and an 82 GPZ-550 in well used but basically original condition. They asked me to pick one to ride and even though the V-Max was fast, it was that red GPz that really called to me! What an amazing bike for its day!

Awesome. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one making bad decisions about vehicles.

Nope, not gonna be a bobber. I just want to freshen up the styling a little bit. I'm not planning on hacking it up. Just want to remove the fairing, and then clean up the back fugly tail section a little bit. Then put some miles on it....

It's a good running bike, was prob the shiat back in the day.

It's really quick for it's vintage, I can see how these little one's were game changers.

This one is the first year of the single swing arm unitrak.

Lol, it was only a grand.... So it's not that bad of a decision... :-P Going by my past ones at least. I've seemed to come out a little ahead on my 2 wheelers. It's the one's with 4 wheels I get into trouble with....

My buddy had had the GPZ 305 back in the day. It was cute. ;)

Actually I was jealous 'cause I had nothing. Actually and RM80 but by then I wanted a road bike.

I was torn between another dual sport (Ive had 3) and street bike. After putting 200 miles on it commuting so far, I'm glad I bought a steet bike.

Little fun fact on this bike, it was coined "pocket rocket"

Ran a 12.68 quarter mile in period tests... So yeah I'd call that cute :)

Finally got the seat open so I can remove the fugly rack on the back

this. I can picture it. badass.

Damn I just went to remove the rack mine has on the back. What a pita. Cant get to the bolts for the luggage rack because the rear body work... cant get the body work off cuz the rear grab bar.... which is held on by bolts that are in accessable b/c the inner fender.... tempted to just buzz it off... Not going to tho....

1000 miles later. Updated rear turnsignals, eliminated the rack and rear grab bar, new grips, bar end mirrors, repaired seat, lubed cables, new brakes, restored plastics, and cleaned. Been a nice ride so far!
