View Full Version : Who boats a lot on Horsetooth Reservoir?

So, as in my PFD thread, I'm thinking of getting a canoe. I want to spend a lot of time canoeing Horsetooth next summer, but I've heard (and seen) that there's a lot of boat traffic that would compromise the safety of a plan like that. Does anyone do any watercraft activities on Horsetooth on a regular basis, and how would you assess canoe opportunities for it? I also want to do some nigh canoeing once I gain experience.

If you stay in the coves you would probably be ok but I wouldn't anyways. Plenty of other lakes and reservoirs just as close that do not have the large boat traffic.

I see people out there in canoes and kayaks all the time and ask myself WTF are they thinking. On weekends there is enough traffic that it would be pretty choppy in a canoe, enough I would be uneasy in one.

I go out about 20 days a season. Its busy on weekends and terrible on holidays. I'd stay away on those. However im mostly a mid week boater so its great. I've seen as few as 5 boats out.
Its pretty big but cruising a canoe could be fun. I'd start at the north end if I was paddling... Closet to the coves and islands.

I agree with the above. I stick to wakeless lakes in my canoe. It's safer and more comfortable. Did you find some pfds's? I'd have to look but I may have one or two for you.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Yeah, I would be going mostly on the weekdays too, so I think traffic would be much lighter on those days. Mike (Newracer) said he has a couple PFD's for the kids, but I've been busy and haven't gotten over there yet. Still looking for a couple of adult ones, but I'll have a bit more cash flow in January, so I might wait til then.
