Here's another trip report for the camping/fishing crowd. :)

Mileage from Golden - 200 one way. Route was 287 through Ft Collins to Laramie, then west to the Medicine Bow Natl Forest. There's a Wally World in Laramie if you need a license or last minute supplies. Pay attention on 287 as we have seen two near head-ons due to jerks trying to pass too closely to oncoming traffic. Nice drive otherwise, pretty scenery.

Amenities - very, very few. There's a boat ramp but no water, restrooms, tables, etc.

Roads - really depends, but I wouldn't do it without 4WD in the majority of areas.

Camping - is good, though few areas (few people too, so no biggie). Try to camp on the west side because the trees are SO dense that camping on the east side results in all-day shade and chill. Quite a bit of beetle kill. Packed solid lodgepole pines. Don't let your kids wander off, its seriously dense and easy to get lost. Second time there and again saw no camping trailers, so they may not be allowed.

Fishing - not stocked, though the natives are plentiful. Good place for boats or shore fishing (depending though, as there are stumps and things now that the water is so high). Talked to someone with a fish finder and he said they're hanging at around 30ft down. There are golden trout, but do not keep them as its illegal. Lots of other trout that responded to (shore fishing) power bait and (boat fishing) wooly boogers, etc.

Weather - elev 9500' so its really cold at night. Storms come up fast in the afternoons and dumped rain like crazy. Overnight temps were really cold, leaving ice on the boat. Be sure to tie things down securely in the afternoons as the wind blows hard from time to time.

Other Stuff - LOTS of bald eagles that come pretty close. There are swamps around the main reservoir with moose. Elk, deer, and the usual are around the res. Laramie is your last hope for supplies. Also, there is no cell service and it takes about 45 minutes to get to Laramie, so be careful with safety stuff as well as your youngsters. No bait or gas available nearby. Bring wood, though there is a lot of driftwood, downed beetle limbs, etc. We had a fire going nearly all day because of really chilly temps. Bring a camp bathroom if you're so inclined....there are no others. Bring water.

Here are some photos.....

it's pretty long when you really need something... But when I go places like that I just try and bring everything I need to stay....(never works tho)

comm's, water purification, crap like that.. I enjoy getting secluded when I can...
