Anyone done it lately? How much of a pain is it?

I have a friend who is going back to MO soon, and would like to bring a couple of his handguns back here. Worth it? or just wait until he can drive??

It's been years since I've done it but the procedures haven't changed much, I think. Hard case with a lock, inside a locked bag. Declare it when you check in, they may or may not have you clear the weapon in front of them, may or may not have you sign a statement that it's empty, lock up the bag and go.

AFAIK there's no difference between flying with a handgun and flying with a long gun, except maybe that the handgun has to be inside another bag where I think the long gun can be by itself in its own locked hard case.

I have heard it isn't bad and it is best to call the specific airline to see what their policy/procedure is.

I do it all the time. Just did it last weekend, actually.

Just have it unloaded in a locked, hardsided case in your suitcase. Declare it when you check in. They will have you sign a form saying that the gun is unloaded, and then they will call the TSA. TSA will send an agent to inspect the gun and sometimes the rest of your bag. They'll give you the OK and take your bag to the airline reps to be sent off to the flight.

Also, if there's any ammo, make sure it's in the original packaging.

More info can be found here (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm).

I've done this several times (even internationally) and it was never painful at all, but I did find that the actual process varied a lot from airline to airline and airport to airport as far as how it went. It was easy every time, just always different.

Yep! I've never had any trouble w/ Delta, but that could also be due to being a Platinum Medallion member. But I got  when I declared it at a NorthWest counter one time. It was funny to watch the counterchick scurry off to ask if it was ok and then her very obvious discomfort with the rest of the process.

Yeah, I've done it on Delta now and again. No problems. Gotta love when the Sheeple get involved. Eeek!!! A gun!!!
