I should add for my photo above:
I uploaded this late last night and forgot to add that it is a 3 exposure HDR combo. Each exposure was 1.3 seconds I believe. I will have to check.
This is actually my first ever attempt at an HDR. I did not do it on purpose, I happened to have 3 images that I took hoping to get proper exposure out of one of them. When I saw this in my file list I decided to give it a try and see what I got. This is the result.

What material are you using for the softbox? It doesn't seem to be diffusing much light. Maybe different placement of the light would help? I need to read your article to see how it's built.

That is pretty impressive. You don't see any motion in the people, which is unusual over 4 seconds total...

The article called for "drafting mylar film" but I could not find that at Michael's. Instead I went for "plastic canvas". I glued two sheets together, but I agree there isn't much diffusion going on. Placement was certainly part of the problem, along with power output. The following was taken yesterday after I experimented a bit more. I do want to try and find the mylar though, as it might be less translucent than this plastic grid stuff.

I took this one on Christmas, I like it, but I'm sort of looking for advice on what settings might have made it more "crisp."
Jocko
December 27th, 2008, 11:05 AM
I couldn't get your exif info, but most lens have a sweet spot between f8-f16. That is generally the sharpest area. Adjust the shutter speed for the correct exposure. Night shots require a very steady tripod. Even if you don't have a nice heavy duty pro model you can still make a cheapy work. Try hanging something with a little weight from the tripod. A bag of rocks, your camera bag, etc. Anything that will help stabilize the tripod. If you have mirror lock up, use it. Use a remote shutter release or the self timer to avoid unwanted vibrations. Your shot is a tough one because of the latitude. It's hard to properly expose the highlights and shadow areas and still get an evenly exposed image. Try to bracket the shot next time. You will have to combine them in an editing program, but that is the best way to get details in the shadow areas without having blown-out highlights dominate the shot.
Cool shot, regardless.

Tripod is pretty middle of the road towards cheapy. I think it is this one:

http://a1672.g.akamai.net/7/1672/116/20081201/www.ritzcamera.com/graphics/products/2-10/291660710.jpg
I did get a couple other at faster exposures, but they just wouldn't light up like this one.
Here is the example of that:
http://web.mac.com/coloradobucky/iWeb/Index/Misc_files/Golden.12.08.Night_2.jpg
Anyway, not to hijack. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to keep playing around.

Take 70 to 58, head South when you hit 93, take the first real right, which is opposite 19th. Stay on road.
Yeah, it was a lower switchback. The problem with the very top is there are a bunch of trees (as RJsfun shows), but that might be the "bracketing" I need.

Bracketing means to take multiple exposures of different time lengths and combining them. Basically making a HDR image out of the exposures.

By any chance is this the big wind farm between Cheyenne and Laramie? Hubby is always sending me out to get photos of renewable energy stuff and I've yet to get any good ones of wind farms. (Of course, once fishing season is back on for me, I'll be headed to Rob Roy a lot and will get some photos of that wind farm!). Very nice photo! Most of this montage is too suggestive for here. If you played tic-tac-toe from the upper left to lower right, those three would be acceptable. I think it's all good, but I don't want to see problems start for any of us, so am erring on the side of caution.

Those are nice Tiffany!
My only critique is on the first one...the background and floor are different shades of white and at least at my end, the transition is abrupt. Maybe you could smooth it out with the smudge tool in PS or something to that effect and make it a little less noticeable. The sharp transition is a little distracting but an otherwise fantastic shot!

It's the lighting off the cyc wall. We noticed it and mopped the floor, but I didn't feel like taking any more pics so...I was way less than enthused yesterday...LOL!
Will probably do some actual editing on these tonight...
Is it just me or do these look a tad bit soft?

Second one, maybe a tad soft but not bad at all.

So on the MBP the first one the floor to wall difference is a HUGE contrast, on the work PC not so much, home kids PC not at all.

My iMacs not calibrated(not yet, calibrator on its way!!) but its fairly close to a calibrated one...and thats what i noticed the biggest difference on. I looked again at it on my PC which has just a cheap LCD and you couldnt even tell.

A few recent pics of my son Curtis.
Here he is standing in for Levi Shirley, who will be the focus of the "On the Edge" segment in Dirtsports' July issue. This was my families first competition. I usually go to these by myself because I don't want to feel like I need to entertain them while I'm also trying to work. Needless to say he was stoked. The whole family had a great time and will be going to Cortez with me next weekend.

Here he is in the backyard. It's amazing how fast they grow. We compared these shots to a shoot I did with him when he was 2-3 years old. Time flies...

I believe he was using a "vehicle rig"...basically, one of those telescopic setups you see that holds your camera off the side of the car. Then you photoshop the arm out....
