Jeska has fallen in love with motorcycle riding in the last year. Every chance we get we ride.

Long story short we found ourselves on I-25 last night during rush hour. Traffic stopped on us. My "Air intake temp" (outside air temp) gauge on my R1 read "133F" Even when we got moving it would only drop into the 110 degree range.

Simply too hot for Jeska's air cooled carburated FZ600 to run. We knew vapor lock was comming and we were headed for the closest exit. We didn't make it. Bike died on her in the middle lane of I-25 near Alameda North bound. Traffic was still mostly at a crawl 5-10 MPH. The entire world turned against us. What the hell is wrong with people???!!!! I am trying to run a block so she can push her bike as far right as we can go. NO SHOULDER! It will sort of run but only at about 1mph. I would have jumped off to help but she can't ride the R1. All I can do is try to keep traffic away from her.

EVERYONE was honking and screaming out their windows at us. Can they not see that she is in the middle of a mechanical failure and trying her hardest to get out of the way???

We finally make it to the edge..but again..no shoulder...just a concrete wall, we are still in the traffic flow.

A white Mercedes finally ends up behind us. He backs off....and just stays there to block traffic for us. No horn, no foul language...jsut help. One person out of all those people that actually seemed to get it. I could not see if he had his flashers on for us or not since I was busy. He stayed there until we made it to the shoulder to get out of the way. Thank you!

If you happen to know anyone this person tell them thanks for me. Hell, I will even take them to diner!

People dont understand that was/is the purpose of the lane splitting law in other states. Air cooled bikes cant just sit in traffic.

My harley has almost done the same thing. Before it did I was going to split lanes, screw that stupid law.

I was in Johnsons Corner yesterday afternoon and a group of about 20+ motercycles was pulling out of the gas pumps onto the crowded road. I stoped in the road and backed up traffic so the rest could all pull out and get on the road to catch the group. Somthing I would think any human would do. Obviosly they were together. Every one of those bikers waved a thank you to me like it was some great acked of kindness. Same thing in yellowstone when a small group would come up on me from behind I would wave them around when the coast was clear. Every one of them waved a thanks also. It's hard enough to ride a bike in traffic so common sense would say to give them a simple break. I guess by all those freindy waves and your story thats not the case. Somtimes I think humans are the worst animals on the planet.

That is all I could think about before it finally vapor locked. "I wish we could just split down that nice open section between cars"

I have riden in California a few times and LOVE lane sharing in traffic jams.

problem here is, that some jackhole would open a door on ya, road rage central, that you were moving, and they wernt. I wouldnt split in Co, even if it was legal.

I would say that in general people get it. Glad you see the reality and are willing to do what is appropriate.

I have been riding for about 28 years and have LOTS of miles on the bike and I have never had an experience like we had last night. It was insane how many people were flat out upset and nearly violent toward us.

Have cars gotten so nice that people have forgotten what a mechanical failure is? Are they so comfy inside now that noone really knew how hot out it was? Or are they so blinded by their own life that they can't be bothered when they obviously see someone else having a problem.

All they had to do was wait 30 more seconds and we would have been clear for them to go on with their day.

Let me get this straight...You know the bike is air cooled, You know its close if not over the 100 degree mark, you know theres heavy traffic on 25 at rush hour... So you know all this can add up to problems for the bike and you still did it anyway. Inconvenienced all those people who have lives of their own for your little joy ride, and they don't have the right to be upset with you??? When you clearly could have avoided the situation???

Temp read as 85 when we left and it has NEVER been a problem before. :flipoff2:

I knew it was going to be a problem AFTER we were on I-25 and the temps started to rise. Once the temps went up we started to make a break for the exit.

I bet you were the guy in the sexy little silver Kia, You should be thanking me today for letting you live last night.

Glad it worked out, and it's cool that your wife likes to ride.

I deal with rush hour twice a day, every day. When the outdoor temps are between 50* and 80*, the normal level of douchebaggery applies.

Under about 40*, minds go numb, and people get kinda dumb.

Over about 90*, and tempers flare, and people really turn up the douche nozzles to full pressure. I think some of them are just boiling in their cars because the AC can't keep up.

I was on the road yesterday afternoon- air intake temps for me at 102* at 60mph. Unreal.

I hope she has leathers- I remember what my air cooled GSXR 750 would do to my legs on hot days. Ouch.

I drive an XR650R, horrible in traffic. I have lane split before, even driven past cops doing it. But there is a time and a place to do it, I think most cops are sensible enough to know what I am doing and why. or at least the ones i drove past.

I was VERY surprised to see 133* standing still and 106+ moving.

She was in a mesh CE Armored jacket, jeans, helmet, boots. The tank is white and she complained about it being VERY hot. Actually cooked some of the paint off the top of the tank between the tank bag and fuel fill.

My tank is dark charcoal and it way a bit toasty. ;) but the R1 is water cooled so it was a bit more livable. Both bikes have had the exhaust heat wrapped too.

I've met Cole a couple times, and I can assure you he is not an irresponsible person. You put up the little stir the pot icon, so i'm gonna just go ahead and say it. Your kinda being a dick dude. Haven't you ever been in a situation where you just needed a little help, even just for a minute? Karma's gonna come around someday bud.

Cole, don't you know that those were IMPORTANT people, honking at you. They have places to go. (sarcasm off) I always try to give people on bikes a break. Nothing is SO important that youcan't give up a few seconds or minutes to help someone out.

Get an old air cooled British bike. The tolerances are so loose they don't care how hot the air is. My Triumph never shut down in the hottest, mid-summer weather. Leaked oil like a sieve, but never shut down.

Tolerences have nothing to do with the boiling point of fuel!

... And I do have a Triumph Speed Triple too

Is her bike fuel injected? Love the Speed Triple, but that's a water cooled in line three cylinder engine, not the old carburated twin like on the Bonnie.

Sure would have appreciated that Mercedes driver once myself.

Chip in my diesel stopped me cold on the overpass on Evans above Santa Fe in the right lane once during heavy traffic. Module is on DS wheel well under the dash, so, I had to have the DS door open slightly. People nearly took my legs off as I undid the cover, some fine citizens even honked & gesticulated as they revved up passing.

Some folks need a good dose of Karma to bite em in the arse. :(

Happens every day in CA too. Usually they'd just move over and block the "lane", so I'd move over a lane to get by them. A buddy of mine (Geesh on here) had someone open their car door in front of him. I think some of the instances are fueled by motorists who don't realize this is legal, but most are just annoyed that they're stuck in traffic and you're not. They can buy a bike too if they don't want to sit in traffic  Despite the associated stress (which you get numb to after a while) and close calls (bumped several mirrors), I still think this should be allowed across the board.

doesn't surprise me in the least - I've had people deliberately pull all the way into the bicycle lane to block me when I'm riding to or from work; even had one guy go as far as to say "as long as I'm stuck in traffic, so will you". It's all about getting pissed off because someone else figured away around the issue and the other person having to impose their misery on everyone else.

I have to admit I had no idea that #1 it is legal in some states to split traffic and #2 a lot of bikes will over heat like that waiting in traffic. Knowing that, I will try to be a lot kinder to them next time.

Riding a bike in Cali. was the best way around hitting a mirror in traffic was very common. never had a door open but plenty of swerve moves. Surface street light to light traffic splitting was nice never had to wait :tisk: for slower drivers.
Always nice to recieve  a good deed.

I wish the drivers in the states were as alert to bikers as they are here in Seoul. Splitting lanes is nothing compared to what the bikers here do. Keep in mind that there is a lot of "Hauling" that is done on bikes and scooters. Bikes split lanes, share lanes, ride on the sidewalks, use crosswalks etc here. the cars are VERY aware of bikers.

Having spent a lot of time on bikes and living in CA for decades, I know this is true. It's amazing how many people really don't realize it's legal and think the motorcyclist is just being impatient. A lot of people also worry that they're going to hit their mirrors (which happened to me once, bastige ) or their car, so they get mad. Educate, educate, educate!

Hope he stopped to exchange his insurance info. If not, thats hit and run.
I hail from CA and in my youth knew this to be legal from day 1 in driver training. Anyone born in raised in CA knows this, it is gone over in detail during driver training. If you find this happening in CA it is a driver that learned to drive out-of-state. Driving anything in CA is a whole different world in comparision to Colo. The drivers here frustrate me more than they did back in CA.
Why is it that more drivers in CO refuse to use a turn signal than I ever saw in CA?:tisk:
