Had a pretty great run up Storm Mtn yesterday, although it ended up being a long one! I think we had about 10 rigs altogether, sorry I didn't get names of everyone, but it was nice wheeling with everyone.

Normally this is a pretty simple trail, but yesterday it was jinxed. We started off with a TJ that developed a crack in one of his high pressure fuel lines. We were able to do a trail repair on that with a split piece of fuel line scavanged off my rear diff breather tube, and some hose clamps thieved off some Dana 300's. Tested it out, and lo & behold, it help! No drips!

We continued on towards the top of the trail, where several people played around in the rockpile area towards the top, trying different lines on the ledges. Took a breather to enjoy the scenery and take in the awesome view.

On the way down, Jason's truck managed to completely tear the steering box off the frame. We did the best we could the strap & bolt it back into place & repair the rag joint, but we were pretty limited in what we could do. It didn't last very long, so Jason called a friend to run a spare box up to Drake where we could pick it up & then take it up to the trail & fix the truck. We got the second box on as best we could (only two bolts & a ratchet strap), but unfortunately, it too got ripped off, breaking the mounts on the box. At this point, he decided that we'd just have to leave it up there for the night, and come back with a trailer in the morning to pick it up.

Finally a little after 11:00 pm (we started the trail at about 11:00 am), everyone was on their way home. On the way home, I noticed a rough vibration at anything less than about 45 mph. I was too tired to stop & see what was wrong at this point, so I kept driving the 30 miles home. As I pulled into the driveway, I heard something come off the Jeep from underneath. I got the Jeep into the garage, and took a quick peek at the rear driveline:

Apparently the straps had loosened around the u-joint, and as I pulled up the driveway, it spit the cap out. Found the cap in the middle of the street, sans needle bearings. Oh well - easy enough fix. Apparently I killed my third set of leaf springs too though - my rear pinion angle is all messed up now. Maybe time to link it!

All in all a pretty decent day - thanks Peter for setting this up, and thanks to everyone for helping out when trouble arose. The rest of my pictures (not many) are here:

Wow sounds like a much tougher trail, than I was expecting. Maybe it was a good thing I ended up in Boulder....

Not too tough, just some unlucky instances I guess... Definitely not a trail I'd drive up to do more than once a year... but if a clear enough day comes around I'd definately do it again!!

That, and the paved portion up Big Thompson Canyon is pretty darn cool.

Yeah, it's not a tough trail - just bad luck yesterday I think.

Not at 10:00 at night it wasn't! :D It helped keep the bugs away too.

ah I see!! I didn't think about that part of the day...

Here I was thinking that you guys were just delusional and needed mental evaluation for having a fire on a hot day!

I'm glad that everyone made it down (eventually) in less than 5 pieces... :pbj:

Sounds like it was a great time!

Thanks to everyone that helped out... Mark and Ben especially.

I had to rent a car dolly on Sunday morning from Uhaul... had to tell them that I had a CJ7 or typically they won't let you rent one for an FSJ. Drove it up there behind a half ton chevy truck. The dolly got a couple of scrapes on the bottom as I don't think that is what anyone had in mind when designing the dolly. I had to take my small "roller" tires up with jacks and cordless impacts to swap out the tires. Brutus' track width is 86" and the fender inside is 76" wide. Luckily with the rollers on we had a couple of inches to spare on the tires each side... but the hubs still rubbed.

We heated up the brakes on the chevy a little bit on the way down so we stopped at the Glen Haven turn to let them cool down.

Good times huh ;)

A bit on the dusty side  but thats what rolling up the windows and turning the A/C on is all about :flipoff2:

Yes we got home close to 11:00 I think. The kids finally fell asleep about loveland :D I gotta give them credit for not whining or complaining until nearing the very end.

Was nice meeting everyone and heading out on a scenic trail. Except for the 2 jeeps at the very end

I have a few scrapes on the bottom of the rig, but not bad for a 7,500lb mall wagon. :D maybe next time I'll actually air DOWN my tires :D

I had a great time as well, and managed to stay towards the front of the line so I only had an inch of dust inside instead of a foot. Had some very nice views all the way up and back, which made the otherwise short trail well worth the ride from the Southeast Metro area.

I snapped a few pic's - here are some, and you can find others at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimrich/sets/72157605879364148/

The family and I had a great time as well, I hated to leave when you went down to get the new box, but the wife was done, and it would have been hazardous to my wheelin future to go back up the hill again.
