She says, "It was all about saving money". My calculations using her figure of $100 a week with gas at $3.97 a gallon has her driving about 700 miles a week using her 28 mpg figure from her Element. Now if she does get 40 mpg out of the Metro that is a savings of $30 week. It will take her 4.7 years to break even if the car needs absolutely no maintenance. If she is keeping the Element ,then she has the extra expense of insurance for th Metro. If she sold the Element, I'm sure she lost money from depreciation. I have a feeling she flunked Math in school.

Nowadays it seems 99% of the population flunked math.

$7300 for a car that's more than ten years old and sold new for $10-12k? I'd say there's more than one math failure in that logic.

I've squeaked 52/53 MPG consistently out of my 93 Metro convertible. It was basically given to me (paid a dollar and a Snickers bar for it) about 4 years ago and in Sept '05 I put a reman engine it and started commuting with it daily. Cost of the vehicle + required maintenance (including oil changes, brakes, etc) since then has been about $2500, maybe less, but most of that was the cost of the new engine ($1700). It sure helped when I commuted to work for a couple years worth (112 miles round-trip) compared to driving my pickup or my 4x4. I haven't had that commute since last December, but in the time I was driving it I put on 70,000 miles and it's been very reliable.

I damn sure wouldn't have bought it for $7300 though.

I have a friend who bought a Geo Metro new. He got head-on'd at 25 mph on a rural mtn neighborhood road by a pu and the geo was totalled.

Don't doubt that one bit. They're built extremely light. That's why I often refer to my Metro as "the beer can".

My mother-in-law has taught math for 40 years. My father-in-law is a science teacher. 7 years or so ago, they paid $6k to have a Volkswagon diesel installed in their Samurai, for the cheaper fuel and good mileage. $2-3K for repairs every few months, they decided it was never going to be cost-effective, especially since it never got the mileage they thought it would  . So they bought a  diesel Liberty. Now, with diesel prices the way they are, they're trading the Liberty in on a new Prius. They drive 50 miles a day on dirt roads in BFE Montana. Not sure what they think they're gonna do when the snow flies again, except fire up the Dodge Cummins 4x4 crew cab and REALLY get good mileage  . They could have poured half that money into the truck they already had over the years and kept the Sami stock They would've still been ahead, but they can't seem to see past MPG.

Otherwise, very intelligent, likeable, respectable people. Go figure:shrug: .

I bought one new for 8200 in 92 and was commuting with it 50 miles a day in la traffic 5 days a week and would only fill it after the 8th day of commuting putting around 9 gallons in with a 10.8 tank. Of course after a few years I got rear ended by a damn fiero at a stop light and that poor car was 3 feet shorter. 1 in the front 2 in the back. The car wont survive a hit but I wasnt really hurt but it would of been a lot worse if it was an old caddy.

Of course my math when it comes to saving money on gas is fubar. Bought a 300 dollar mg that gets 24ish around town and 28ish on the highway and the truck is now parked unless its raining. However to get a 300 dollar MG reliable and road worthy is many times the amount I paid for it. But it sure beats driving a damn civic or other modern econo box.

i just drive my little vw 2.0 slow good gas mileage looks nice, better with my 17" rims and lowpro parada spec 2 racing slicks i think i spend about 25.00 a week and drive anywhere i need to go, but i dont feel sorry for people that decieded they needed the biggest truck out on the road and now have to spend 100.00 a week just for gas.
