Blanca peak was one of the most amazing camping trips I've ever had. meteor showers both nights I was up there. Going form desert to forrest to tundra to rock and thin air all in a day, great fishing at como and the wheeling can't be beat.

Bring your "A" game for the trail.
Yikes, in more than a couple of spots!

That's one easy trail. I did it in the late 80s in a 2wd Chevy Luv pickup running 30 inch bald highway tires in a hail storm.

Well I would have but it was at night, and my back up lights were out. So I thought of safety first and did it the easy way. :D

Notice no one spotting Frank. We're just all standing there watching. No help whatsoever.
I got the same treatment on Hell's Gate last weekend. 50 people at the top, not a spotter to be found anywhere............

Just be nice to all the hikers doing the 14ers. It's a LONG day for them and any rude wheelers would not be welcoming.

i give bikers, hikers, dirtbikers and other wheelers more than enough space and courtesy on the trails or even roads for that matter:) I have done all that stuff and i would expect the same courtesy from other if i were them. So that is no problem for me ;)

I didn't mean to sound like I was pointing the finger in any way. Just a reminder. I've hiked Blanca from the bottom a couple times and have ran into some less than courteous wheelers. Makes a long day that much longer.

I offered to drive up gear for some hikers last summer. They were worried I wouldn't make it to the top (I was thinking the same about them :D )
They were happy they didn't have to carry their heavy packs and bulky items up a tough hike :D

scottycards Right where you have that pic . Couple years (in fact was MEMORIAL WEEKEND) ago seen a SON and DAD roll from there to the road below, killed them both. One of the guys had a camcorder on them whole way. Mother and daugher (wife) were right up the trail when it happened.
County was wanting to close the trail then, they were having a meeting on it. I called told them I was there it wasn't the trails fault, my wife picked up 18 empty beer cans. We had followed him and 5 others up from close to the bottom each time he tackled a obsticle had beer in hand. I can still hear him; hold that beer in the air and say one more of these and I can do that. I am sure he didn't drink all 18 but had more than his share. Had a dog with them that survived. While rescue was there a hiker that was up by the lake fell and broke a leg. He was glad to see the vechiles.

and THAT is why drinking on while wheeling is A STUPID STUPID STUPID thing to do. I mean come on people, if you must drink, at least do it on a trail that your not driving on a freakin shelf road with a fookin drop off on one side. Or just wait until you get to a good stoping point and have 1 or 2...but 18?? WTF???

There is a memorial plaque up there embedded in the rock now. The plaque gets your attention, and lets you know that it's a dangerous spot on the trail.
Tragic.
One of the best trails in CO, IMO.

SADthing was that they weren't far from the lake where they were to camp all weekend. Could have goten just a snockered as they wanted and hurt nothing.
They paid with two lives lost we all almost suffered because of that stupidity also.
At that time was narrower than is now, I have seen pics where it has been tamed down since that time.

Don't expect it to open soon. I ran up Hermit pass In the same Sangre De Christo Range on Monday and did not get far before I ran into 3' of thick heavy impassable snow. I got to check a Topo map to see just how high I got. Maybe 9,000' ????

The snow is heavy around Blanca, just came back from Alamosa on Monday and the peaks have alot of snow. The cooler weather is slowing the snow melt also... I would geuss end of June or mid July before it is passable.....
