Hey guys n gals,

Looking for a scenic drive I can take the wife on Monday for part of her Mother's Day present. Prefer it to be north of the I-70 corridor or south of Red Feather Lakes, with some abandoned buildings or waterfalls or stream crossings, but an easy drive and not challenging 4x4-wise. A dirt road or two rutted trail would be perfect. We might stop in the middle and picnic for lunch.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Sevenmile trail perhaps.

It's up in the Poudre Canyon right by Rustic/Glen Echo off Hwy 14.

It's an easy trail with a few small water crossings...really small. There is an old mine on a spur that dead ends near the beginning. You can go left or right not far in, right will take you to the mine. There is another left/right decision but you'll see the mine up to the right. Left gets you back on the main trail through a small water crossing. There is one rocky part which will need a good line for stock vehicles. I ran it in my stock 04 Xterra - hit my side rails but that's all. After that, it's an easy trail. There is an abandoned/old homestead type cabin up there too. I would turn around after you get to the second larger clearing area if you go (also good picnic spot) - I think that's after the cabin. After that, there still could be a lot of snow, but I don't know. Ran it with a friend about a month ago and we got a bit stuck so got out and turned around at that point.

Anyway don't know if that's more than you wanted, but check out the trail on traildamage.com.

Yeah, we camped up near there last summer. Thought that might be pretty high on the list for Monday. I also was almost open to Guanella Pass, but that's almost too much of a drive from Greeley.

A couple of just ran sevenmile this morning. We made it all the way without a problem. My buddy was rollin' in a stock '03 Wrangler with street tires. A little rear bumper rash and a couple diff dings but not much of a problem for him. Came out at Old Swamp Lady :D. I love that sign.

Guanella is still closed anyway, along with most anything that approaches 10,000 feet.
I was also going to suggest something up Poudre. Have fun and happy Mom's day.
