View Full Version : DAVE GROHL's 'Open Letter' To METALLICA

I really like this guy.
Former NIRVANA drummer and current FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has released the following "open letter" to METALLICA:
"Dear METALLICA,
"Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album 'Kill 'Em All' from a mailorder catalogue called Under The Rainbow, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1983 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even 'St Anger'!).
"I can't wait to hear the new shit, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's ****in' minds, because you're ****in' METALLICA!
"Good luck. And don't release it until it's kick-ass.
"Yours, Dave Grohl.
"P.S. Are you finished recording the drums yet?"

I?m definitly in the minority by thinking that the newer stuff is good too. It may not be quite as good as the 80?s stuff but St. Anger had 4-5 good songs; Frantic, Sweet Amber, Some Kind of Monster, The Unnamed Feeling. Dirty Window and St. Anger were both okay too. Unfortunately the rest of the album did suck.
I?m hoping the new album has a good instrumental like Call of Ktulu and Orion, but I guess those went away when Cliff did.

If they all would have died on that bus during the Master of Puppets tour, they would have the best metal band ever.
Now they are D bags.

Not wishing death on anyone, but I somewhat agree. Although I like "And Justice for All" and "Garage Days" jammed even though it was covers. Their new stuff sucks balls.

I think every album they have put out has had some good stuff on it. Granted I think puppets was the best overall album. I think the new album has potential, but i'm not on the bandwagon that feels that metallica should sound like they did in the 80's for the rest of their careers.

I think that other than the instrumentals you mentioned, their most creative work was load/reload.

Completely agree. I saw that documentary and it said that Hetfield blew out his voice recording the black album. His new "singing" sounds like $hit.

Kirk is a great guitar player. I still say give me Mustaine however. Mustaine and Marty Friedman could shred to no end. I listen to a lot more Megadeth today than I do Metallica. During the late '80's early '90's it was the other way around for me.

Black was the begining of the end... The rest kinda lame. Ever since they switched producers they became pop rock.
I saw them at Monsters of Rock. They Rocked. I saw them at Red Rocks for Justice. They rocked. Saw them at McNichols for Black. Meh. Sure wish Guns and Roses showed up.

I wouldnt go as far as to say they couldnt be roadies( :lmao: ) but i just dont understand the hype that surrounds them. They are a good band for sure and i enjoy listening to some of their stuff...i would not call them a GREAT band though. I mean sure, they have some crazy guitar solo/riffs and some insane drumming but really...their vocals IMO have never been anything special. I dont get it...

Ok, so I exaggerated a little... but it's not like someone else didn't beat me to it..."one of the greates *****ing bands of allllll time"?
I might go for one of the better bands to come out of the '80s hair hype, but even then I'd put Def Leppard and Queensryche over them.
Good lord, I left Molly Hatchet off my earlier list. How could I leave out them what did Flirtin' with Disaster?

Dave Grohl is a freakin master! Listening to what he has done with FooFighters has made me do a recheck on all my Nirvana tunes. I believe he was the mastermind of Nirvana, and Cobain was just a front man.

Best thing Cobain did was pull the trigger. I doubt Dave Grohl would have ever been on his own if he hadn't. Too bad he didn't make it a murder/suicide and take Courtney Love with him.

Like any other band that is out there change happens over the years. If every album/cd they put out sounded like and felt like Ride the Lightning what progress would they have made as musicians? There are some other things about this band that just rubs me wrong. The whole RIAA thing that they have been involved with makes them seem like old monolithic single train of thought assclowns that refuse to except and move on with technology and the times. They are good musicians and have put out a lot of great albums. Lars used to be one of metals greatest drummers and I don't think he can play some of the stuff he wrote 15 - 20 years ago. Hammit is a great guitarist, anyone that takes or took lessons from Satriani damn sure better be.

How could you guys leave Zeppelin out of the hard rock list? They changed their sound from album to album, but it was all still great music. They are in my top ten.
I think Dave Grohl is hilarious anytime I see him on an interview, and I give him credit for what he has done. That being said, I can't listen to more than a few songs. He ends up just screaming, not singing. My opinion of that may change, as the Mrs. got us tickets to see Foo Fighters at Red Rocks this summer.

I stopped really listening to Metallica after Justice. And that I was on the fence about. Is there stuff good? Debatable. But there old stuff, (Ride the Lightning is still may favorite) including Garage Days and Garage days Revisted is what I consider "Metallica. The rest is a different band.

I was there, too. It was a pretty phucked up day for me. I buried a good friend earlier in the day ("missed" a band or 2, don't remember who), and didn't care for metal, or Metallica at the time. But I knew Fade to Black, and when they played it, it gave me goose bumps!
Rush used to be my all time fav. But I haven't liked much since Signals. They are all TOP musicians, though.
Zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever.
My favorite current band is Porcupine Tree. If any of you are interested in bands that not only change A LOT from album to album, but pull it off completely, you should check them out. And for the drummers out there, check out Gavin Harrison, who has been with them for the last 3 albums. Scroll down for videos. And even for the non drummers, click on "The Cymbal Song" video. It's an unusually creative way to use cymbals.
