Wifey's B-day end of the month and need to know where to go in Northern Cali for a weekend trip. Interested in only staying at hotels within the area of the wineries and what area should I go to (never been there).
Not interested in Western Slope stuff or Seattle, been there done that.. A lot.
Looked on Winecountry.com and too hard to tell.
Help is appreciated.

Napa Valley. Fly into SFO or Oakland, rent a car, drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. Pick a hotel (we prefer B&Bs) in Napa Valley. Lots of wineries with tours, tasting, etc. I think there's even some kind of Napa Valley scenic train trip. Should be easy to find Napa Valley tourist info on the web.

Politically? Not so much. Cost-wise for travel? Yeah.

Rubicon estate and Stag's Leap were my favs when we went, my parents live in norcal so I can't comment off hand on B&B's cause we would just go up from their house.

SWMBO and I were out there last November. We stayed @ Travis AFB outside of Fairfield and drove a circle route--north thru the Sonoma Valley past Santa Rosa, then east to Napa Valley on Porter Creek Rd. (very scenic drive) to Calistoga, then south through Napa. We just roamed around stopping at places that caught our attention. The only winery I specifically recall was Ravenswood (http://www.ravenswood-wine.com/) as we love their red zinfandels and it was our first stop.

If you want I can email you some good stuff tomorrow. PM me with your email, if you would like. We work with RadCru out there and are pretty connected to some cool places because of it.
In my mind, I would think about what kind of wine I liked and or what type I would like to explore. Cali is cool but so is Oregon. Oregon has some cool places and make some very good juice.
The grape unique to the US as far as significant production is Red Zinfindel and the way we do it is unique to the World, basically.

I stayed here after leaving Nappa and crossing over hwy 20. What a drive! You get to see the rocky coastline right after driving thru the giant redwoods. Cheap and free breakfast. Ask for an ocean view.http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc/1/en/hotel/fobca/transportation

Cabs, Pinot, Merlot and Ports. I thought about Oregon as well but perhaps save for another trip..

Do you prefer hotels or B&B's? Personally I hate B&B's..don't want to deal with strangers early in the a.m. :D
A client of mine is a 'wine consultant' for restaurants, etc. She says this wine train is not to be missed, but she's in her late 50's- maybe it would be too low key for you guys? I know a few others (younger) who have gone and said it was great too.

My sister and BIL are wine lovers and spend a lot of time up there. They have a few places they really like. I'll email her and post up later.

Meeh, we got married at a B & B so either way. I am thinking of 2-3 full days max (we have 2 kids) away from them. So the train may not be good.
I searched for some time today and could not find reviews on the hotels along with where the "ideal" place to stay is in Napa. Her and I love scenic places Surprisingly, I thought it would be easier to find on the Interweb but no luck..
And, PM sent to Gags..

Went to Temecula last year and there were quite a few there and some even had B & B's. Oregon is pretty nice also, there are quite a few places there.

Make sure you stop by Praeger if you're into Ports. It's a small outfit run by two brothers. Hands down the best port I've found and great people. Worth the trip alone just to go there.

I liked Peju (SP) but I know really not much about vino. The Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa (http://www.fairmont.com/sonoma) is pretty great.
They have a package (http://www.fairmont.com/sonoma/HotelPackages/Discovery/SpeedMeetsSpaPackage.htm) with the racing school ;)
I thought that Audi had a package with them that included a S4 to drive from SF.
