With how high gas prices have been getting recently I have decided to turn my 2001 Honda XR250R dirt bike into a dual sport bike. Ill probably purchase a dual sport kit from Baja Designs. I also want to swap out my aluminum wheels for black powder coated wheels and get some kind of exhaust for it. Its most likley going to be a fairly slow build over the next couple of months seeing as my bike dosent even run at the moment. I hope to have it running and reliable within the next week.

Also thinking about running a 14 tooth sprocket on the front and a 42t on the rear. From the reading i've done, i've found that thats a pretty good combo to get up to 55-60mph....?

Stay tuned all... I think this might get interesting...

If I were you I would see if I could get myself into something with a bigger motor! The 250 should be fine around the city with good mileage I guess. Are you putting supermoto rims/ tires on it when you change out the rims? I think it would be cool to have both street wheels and dirt wheels for my Street Legal YZ426F. Right now I just run my knobbys on the street.

Also, I think the Baja Designs kit is a bit of a waste of money for Colorado. In colorado all you need to be street legal is a headlight, tail light, horn, mirror, and brake light. I have made a bunch of bikes street legal lately. I get a hydro switch from my local shop for $12, a MSR mirror from my local shop for $15, and a honker bicycle horn from walmart for $7. All together that is like $35. The BD comes with turn signals, high/ low beams, a new headlight, etc. I think it was designed for the rest of the states! I don't mind signaling with my arms either. I would rather be more dirt and less street.

Also, I made an older XR250 street legal for my buddy. We ended up using a LED strip light for the brake light because the stocker only has 1 filament. The light was like $18 from the local shop. we mounted it right below the stocker and wired it to the switch so it comes on when he gets on the brakes. It was flxible and mounted with 2 bolts, so it was easy to mount up. We fiddled with a resister and a bypass, but we decided the LED was much easier. My Old WR had a dual filament bulb, so it was much simpler. MY YZ and my wifes KX have aftermarket tailights on them with dual filament bulbs so nothing was needed.

When you take it to get it registered be sure you have a VIN verification (most shops will do them for free if you bring your bike down), a bill of sale stating that it was sold as "offroad only", and proof of insurance. You can use proof of insurance from your car if the bill of sale is less than a month old.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for some of the info. I decided that im going to ditch the Baja Designs kit and just do the brake light swtich, rear view mirror and bicycle horn.

As far as tires and wheels go, I want to get rims that are black with the silver spokes, Im also going to throw in a kill switch so someone cant just walk up to it, jump start it and drive off, and then some type of exhaust and im going to be done. After a little thinking I decided I wanted to keep this project on the cheep.

Picked up some parts today.

I got the brake light switch, and a new main jet #120, a new oil filter and some oil.

So I managed to change the oil tonight, put in the new filter and the new jet. Now all I need to do is empty out the gas tank and the reserve tank, from the past when I emptyed the tank, it was always hard to completely empty the tank seeing as there would still be gas in the reserve tank inside the gas tank.... anyone have ideas on what will empty the reserve, maybe pulling the petcock?

I'll try to be carefull with it Sir Frank.

This morning I was able to put everything back together, and I tossed in some 91 octaine petrol tryed to get it running and it started!

So now that it runs, its time to get all the bugs out and make it street legal.

Rus im not 100% on this but i believe if you make it street legal and drive it on the street you have to have a motorcycle endorsement on your license. Might want to check into that.

if you already have it then nevermind

You are correct, and I have already looked into it. But I can still register it and such. :D

So last sunday I was able to go out to PMP(PMI) and run around on the bike with sonofmayham and had a blast. It was the first time in about 2 years that I was actually able to ride the bike. I gave it a nice clean since it was dirty after the ride and threw on some stickers....

Started installing the brake light switch today, got it all put in and instead of making the light brighter it completley turns the rear light off. So tomorow im going to have to recheck my work and figure out what happened.

I made my xr650r street legal, the best part about riding on the street is when you blow past a car and see the look when they relized they just got passed up by a dirt bike.

Your wiring must be messed up. When I wired my XR400 I took apart the bulb socket to find that the bulb and the socket are for a 2 filament bulb, they just aren't wired with both wires. I added a wire to the socket by sliding it in the back and soldering it from the front. Then I used my die grinder to de burr it. Now it looks like factory. Then I basically wired into the hot for the other filament, ran it through the switch and then ran it to the new filament.
