His tactics are a little, crude, rude and in your face. However-he is factual from what I can see. Be interesting to see how this one goes down.

As much as I despise illegal immigration across any of our borders, I'd have to say that once again Dougie has spoken for himself, not his constituents.

Illegal immigration is not about bigotry and unfortunately Dougie can't seem to grasp the concept. This guy is an embarrassment to the entire state.

Rando

i love the way all the PC better than thou do gooders gasp and get all indignant as soon as they realized what he said :laughing:
I'll vote for Dougie every chance i get just to piss off those people.

it is the truth though, i work next to them everyday and know that we don't get the educated upper class of Mexican society. most of them are peasants who can barely communicate in their own language much less ours.

I did not speak...

"First they came for the Communists ;
I did not speak because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews ;
I did not speak because I was not a Jew.
Then they came to fetch the workers, members of trade unions ;
I did not speak because I was not a trade unionist.
Afterwards, they came for the Catholics ;
I did not say anything because I was a Protestant.
Eventually they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak ..."

you might not like the guy but i think he speaks for a lot of hard working tax payers that are tired of being trod upon and taken advantage of by our supposed public servants.

how much of your tax dollars are you comfortable with being taken from you, squandered, pissed away and wasted on useless BS that you really don't have any control over?
Bruce has the platform to voice his opinions and does so. That makes him extremely unpopular with people that get their income from our tax dollars.

and Frank, you're a helluva nice guy and i respect your opinion, but since when is telling the truth make you a bigot?
they ARE for the most part uneducated people from southern Mexico,central and south America.

Since he is a Politician, he needs to be politically correct. I don't though as it isn't Illegal. yet.
From what he said, there at that time, I agree with him. Most educated Mexicans are in Canada. Canada openly welcomes EDUCATED Mexicans. They won't take what we get.

I have a question. Since moving back up here from AZ and Kali and gone 5 years, what the hell happened? This area is now FULL of Mexicans. I don't mean Hispanics either. It wasn't like this 5 years ago. Where is all the people other than Mexicans work at?
Our pay scale at work for on the floor is $11-$16 Hr. There is very few people there other than Mexicans. I don't know of a single American Hispanic person there. Most are Mexicans.

Since I'm speaking the truth, this is a Bigoted question I'm sure now.

ZappBranigan

Well, the term "peasant" has historically been used by people of the upper classes to denigrate and demean the people of the agrarian working class, so using terminology like that shows him to be an arrogant snob who considers agricultural workers to be some lower life form.

Second, as to "illiterate" if the illegal immigrants are "illiterate" then why are there so many signs written in Spanish? Illiterate would mean unable to read, wouldn't it? From what I've seen most of the illegals can read just fine, it's just that they can only read Spanish. That's not the same thing as being illiterate.

Then again, Bruce is the politician who enjoys saying or doing controversial things to get his name in the news, right? So if that was his intent, I'd have to say:

Well, the truth is that most of them are poor and poorly educated. After all, if they had money and education they wouldn't NEED to come here illegally!

If he had used those words would you all be happier? That would have been more tactful, but the underlying meaning would have been essentially the same.

Yeah, he's a tactless doofus, but I don't see anything inherently racist in his statement, and it seems to me like the statement was basically true.

Poor? Yes. Poorly educated? Compared to what? I see people with college degrees who can't write a coherent paragraph, I would call them "poorly educated."

But do you think they left their little village in Mexico because they didn't have enough education? "Sorry Pedro, if you don't have at least a BA you can't shovel shit in my corral. Go north, maybe you can get a job picking tomatoes for a dollar an hour." :D

Education is only valuable if there are jobs for educated people. They aren't leaving Mexico because of their inability to understand the poetry of Emily Dickinson, they're leaving Mexico because there aren't any jobs there, education or not.

It's not what he said, it's how he said it.

Doug Bruce's self-serving arrogance continues to get in the way of gaining respect from the majority of his peers and constituents. His intentions may be justified, but his contempt for anyone different to him prevents him from gaining credibility.

Does anyone recall when he was cited back in the early 90s for basically being a slum lord with his Denver rental properties.

Does anyone recall when he was cited back in the early 90s for basically being a slum lord with his Denver rental properties.

Yup. I remember his defense to the charges was that the politicians, the "establishment", had trumped up the violations as retribution for getting TABOR passed.

The terms "illiterate" and "peasants" are not particularly demeaning or racist. But the guy did raise a legitimate issue, and rather than responding to the point he was making, we get a "How dare you?" and a call for punishment.

I'd rather see the legislature spend more time discussing the merits (or lack thereof) of Bruce's position on this issue, than discussing how outraged they are about his lack of sensitivity.:idea:

I was thinking about this.

I am an illiterate peasant as well.

Let's see: I only have a 4 year college degree- hardly could I be considered "highly educated". For that, I'd have to get at least a Masters, MBA, and PhD. Of course, there's always multiple PhD's to pursue.

So.........not very well educated- check.

Hmmmmm, that leaves "working in agriculture". Well, our company makes steel landscape edging, and a lot of our customers are directly involved in the landscaping business.

I'll count that. Peasant.

I'd rather be an illiterate peasant than a douche nozzle any day.

I really hope the MSM gets a hold of this story and ends this DN's sorry career right now.

Buh-bye, Douglas Bruce.

ADL Decries Rep. Bruce Comments Calling Foreign Workers 'Illiterate Peasants'

Denver, CO, April 22, 2008 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today decried state Rep. Douglas Bruce's (R-Colorado Springs) comments referring to foreign guest workers as "illiterate peasants" who are unneeded in Colorado.

Bruce H. DeBoskey, ADL Mountain States Regional Director, issued the following statement:

Rep. Bruce's comments reflect the bigotry and xenophobia that lay just below the surface of the debate on immigration in this country. In a legislative discussion on a pilot program to permit legal temporary agricultural workers in Colorado, Rep. Bruce's comments unmask the ugly nativist sentiments that underlie the arguments of some opponents of immigration.

Rep. Bruce's rhetoric feeds the hateful, dehumanizing hysteria surrounding the presence of foreign workers in our country, encourages demeaning stereotypes of Latino residents and agricultural workers (whether they are here legally or not), and have been rightly condemned by Colorado's legislative leaders of both parties.

ADL calls upon all leaders in Colorado to resist the temptation to play upon xenophobia, stereotypes and bigotry when discussing the important immigration issues that face our state and our nation.
