What if we added a new forum just about projects? You could post all the pics you wanted, talk about an idea for a project, get ideas for projects.

Just an idea.
what do you think?

Gen4x4 is getting pretty busy and I think it's time we had something like this. I'd like to see something a little more focused for the competition / fabrication crowd. Anyone else have any thoughts?

We could do a Newbie and Advanced tech section?

My thoughts exactly. I do like the idea of an advanced fabrication forum. You could put quite a bit in there that would normally take up a lot of space in the Gen 4x4 area.

A Fab forum would be cool, seems we have quite a few DYI types around here these days.

A "how to" section might a nice addition as well. I don't know if that would be kind of like what Big Dave was talking about with the Newbie/Advanced tech sections. But I think it would be helpful to people, especially me being a first time jeep builder (owned many, just never built one from the frame up, until now) instead of posting a thread and hoping/waiting for someone to reply that has done it. Of course you run into problems of people posting how-to's of the not-so-right-way to do something, but I am sure there are ways aruond it. Just thought I would add a suggestion as well.

I like an advanced forum idea, weather it be specifically for fab or not, I have no opinion.

As for a How-To section, don't forget about the ability to search old threads too. Most things have been discussed at one time or another and can be found still in the archives. ;)

Not to be an ass but I'd like to see the board go more along the pirate route as far as searching for stuff goes. I'm not sure if it's possible to make an index or contents but it seems like every other week we see a post about on board air, or some other thing that's been discussed out the wazoo.

I can understand the I want to know the answer to my specific question now idea but it's almost like the tech forum has become a place where people just post anything...

What if there was a section like the one mentioned before called projects and you listed the project but then posts were put or moved there and then the general posts were left alone?

For example, something like this...

In the sport of 4x4ing there are many different projects one can attempt to complete on their rigs. Many of these projects are not vehicle specific and with some adapting are valuable universal goodies for everyone. In this forum we will attempt to identify some of these projects and compile a searchable database of information for your use.

On Board Air - How is it done, wiring, compressors, ideas, pro kit vs home made, etc

On Board Welder - How is it done, wiring, alts, ideas, pro kit vs home made, etc

Tires - Who runs what and why

Lighting - Who runs what and why

Battery and Dual Battery Questions and setups

Something like that?

Is it doable?

The problem with getting that detailed in the forums is that it would take a lot of time, something none of us seem to have much of, readers included. Eric may feel differently but, I am pretty sure I am not willing to take the time to maintain something like that as it would be an on going thing. Not a bad idea, just prohibitive to having a real job and building our own rigs graemlins/rasta.gif

I'm not sure separate Newbie and Advanced tech sections would work very well on this board. It works (kind of) on PBB, but there are over 30k members there. It's also kinda hard to decide over there which section a question should be posted on, and the newbie section doesn't generally get good responses to many questions 'cause many of the advance members obviously ignore that section.

Let's face it, many "newbie" questions can only really be answered well by people who aren't newbies. If the advanced tech people get pissy about newbie topics in the current tech section here, how many will take the time to surf a newbie tech section and answer questions?

I've been wheeling for about 30 years now, so don't consider myself a newbie, but I still am on some topics. I try to go out of my way to help newbies as people helped me learn years ago, and I've never replied to someone simply telling them to search. Those frequent replies on PBB bug the snot out of me, and I for one, would hate to see this board get that way.

I do think a section devoted entirely to fabrication would be useful tho...

I totally agree with steve here, I dont like pirate whatsoever, for that exact reason. we all have the same hobby, some know more, some know nothing... there is no harm in teaching, and when i was a newbie, I really liked the fact that people would answer my questions, and now i realize how stupid they were, i kick myself, but I learned from you all. dont let co4x4 become pirate!

I too agree with Steve. I do not like Pirate for the same reason. Those of you who aren't newbies and do know vast amounts more than us that are starting, seem to forget that you were NOT born with all that knowledge. You started out a newbie just like us and asked the same (yes I admit , sometimes) stupid questions. Would you have the knowledge base you now have if your then stupid questions were ignored? I don't think so. :D
I do like the Fab section Idea.

Maybe we could try adding a product review section also. It would go along with the same concepts here and would be a good way to ask questions about these mods or even get new ideas for your own rig.
