I am from Chicago. Perhpas the most unionized city in the nation. Unions can be a major pain in the ass for companies, but they also serve their members well.

I am not "pro-union", but would not vote to ammend our states constitution to keep them under wraps.

Oh please, they screw the members over just as bad as the company. I was fired with out cause while in a union position. The union lied to me, told me it was going to 3rd step, and would take a while for it to be resolved. I called them back later and found they lied, and because they screwed up I was screwed. I HATE unions, they made my work at that job suck, and when they should have been there for me they ****ed me.

I will 100% vote yes on that, no way will I ever be a part of a union or pay dues to a union.

Approving this would not keep unions "under wraps." It would keep them from extorting $$$ from anyone in a "union job" who doesn't like, agree with, or wants to support then union. Right now if you're in a "union job" you have no choice but to pay their dues. They don't give a rat's ass if you join, but you gotta pay. Been there, done that. I would 100% vote for it.

Yep. Me too. Had a job where I disagreed with the union's procedures, leaders, objectives, how they spent my money... pretty much everything about it. Didn't matter. Had to pay the union dues if I wanted to keep my job. In fact, paying my union dues was MORE important to keeping my job than actually doing the job well!

That is a stupid and counter-productive way for things to work!

As others have stated, I have no use for Unions, they had their time and place. But I see no need for them now. :tisk:

when I was in the CWA union they claimed that I could get my dues back cause they supported political causes that I didn't agree with using my money.

Think I ever saw any of that money back even after jumping through their hoops?

Unions breed mediocrity at best. I'll never work in a union again.

When my company does business at the convention center, we have to hire union techs to help with all aspects of the operation. We've been told by the union scheduler that we have to maintain at least a 1-1 ratio of union employees to our employees. Then a couple weeks ago we had two union members tell us that as of Jan 1 2008 the ratio was no longer 1-1 it was 1-0...that's right we could have a show lead that was non-union, and section leads that were non-union, but every section lead had to have a union shadow. Union guys tell us that the new policy is being eased in to minimize aggravation.
Long story short, our client bitches to GM of convention center the other day about labor cost for their show. GM calls my boss asks what the deal is, my boss tells GM what was told to us by union steward. GM FLIPS THE FARK OUT. Pulls contract, calls lawyer, they go through the contract word by word and verify that new "rule" is bogus and the actual minimum ratio is 1 union worked to 2 (TWO!) of our employees. Needless to say, we're a little pissed at said union guy, as their day rates aren't too bad, but the day rate they quote you doesn't include US paying into the pension fund, health insurance fund, etc...which ends up being an additional 20%-40% (you read it right) of the day rate.

Union guys are allright guys and most actually work fairly hard for us, but :flipoff: to Unions.
