At the FS meeting last thurs. the rangers, and the enviros both expressed some willingness to get another trail or "area" designated to provide similar difficulty as carnage with out the enviro impact on the stream that runs through it. Any one have any good suggestions for areas somewhat close to the urban areas of the front range. Just brainstorming here.

Look at this as a land swap with the USFS. They want Carnage Lefthand back, and have offered up another tract of land as yet to be determined.

I am not that familiar with the Boulder ranger district, but I will try to look at some topos.

Anyone here a helo pilot?

I would envision something similar to Buena Carnage in difficulty that has lots of rock ledges. Are there any areas in or around the hogbacks that could be used?

What about some of the granite faces?

This could be a great opportunity.

I would suggest finding an area that is not only hardcore but also a nice place to visit aestheticly.

Maybe right out of the Genesee area. Right before you start heading down floyed hill.

Also, what about up Coal Creek Canyon around Pine Cliff? There could be a very interesting variation of wheeling up there.

I am deffinitely intersted in helping getting another trail open. PM me with any info reguarding this, I would be glad to help. If anyone wants to go hike and scout some areas, just let me know.

I will try to get some topos of both of these areas and post up exactly what I am talking about.

cool, sounds good. if we could find a helo pilot that would rule!!! i would be willing to help pay for fuel and stuff!!!

other than that we should get some promising areas in mind and go scout some of them. it would be nice to have some areas in mind for the next meeting coming up.

if anyone knows for sure some good spots, keep posting them up.

This is the same kind of deal that got us the Independence Trail System. They wanted Rattler closed, so traded land so to speak. Hope it works out to benefit us all.

I know a few pilots, don't know if they can fly a hilo or not, but it would be worth checking into. Seriously though, up Coal Creek Canyon there is some sick terrain up there (tons of rock, slick rock, boulders, etc.)

Hey man if this comes to fruition, mark me down as VERY interested in helping to build that trail. I have trail building experience and I would be happy to donate, say, a weekend a month to such an effort.

Talk to you in 6 days.

Cheers

theres the forest trails up by gross that are already in place. but most of it will be washout / dirt trail. only maybe one obstacle that takes 4 lo

well, the greenies at the meeting kept vying for somewhere out by dia, a trench with rocks in it, i kind of imagined kremmling when they were discussing it. i doubt they are going to let us "create" a harder trail somewhere in the forest/mountains, but if its not damaging resources like the water there in carnage, it may be feasible. I was thinking more on the front range, maybe north out by Fo. Co.

also there was someone on this board in early july claiming he was going to begin getting and OHV park off the ground, any idea what happened to that? :bounce4:

Chad, but if there is a chance to build a trail from scratch, a very difficult trail could be built in that area.

T3N50R, Coal Creek Canyon (Highway 72) is off of Highway 93 between Clear Creek and Nederlands Boulder area, it leads up to Rollinsville.

Edit: The only problem that I see is that if the trail is built up north or out by DIA, Carnage boulder will still see a large amount of traffic and in result will continue being damaged. If a trail is built somewhere in the same general vacinity the traffic could be cut in half between the two. Also, just throwing boulders in a trench will not reduce the traffic, becuase a lot of people would rather go wheeling with scenery, rather than just a barren place to go rock crawling. At the meeting everyone really needs to push the fact that a real trail that is moderate to difficult terrain needs to be built in order to decrease the travel on Carnage.
