View Full Version : Which Gym?

The recent threads on protein shakes and cardio, etc got me wondering:

Where do you work out and why do you like it? I'm lifting at Colorado's Pro Gym in Wheat Ridge. It's a full on meat-head gym. Phil Heath works out there, Heather Armbrust, Dylan Armbrust. I love it there. It a GYM.

I train at The Point Athletic Club in Lakewood, because my company pays for it.

I like Maheny's in Aurora. Although I let my membership lapse. Currently I'm a memeber at LA Boxing for the cardio workout more than anything. Their hour long classes are brutal. For grappling and MMA training I like Tom Johnson's Innovative Martial Arts.

I've got weights and a Smith machine in my basement, no waiting for machines and I get to listen to what I want to.

The new Mountain Side Fitnes is super nice off 120th and Federal. I just need to recover a bit from my Hernia surgery so I can get back in.

I want to look into the gym that is at E470 and Parker Road. I haven't been in there yet but that thing is enormous! Anyone here a memeber there?

Gumm's MMA, LA Boxing and Zingano's...I'll sneek into a 24hr fitness every now and again but it's pretty rare anymore.

i'm assuming your at the LA boxing in Littleton right XJtodd? I'm usually at the one in Westminster during lunches.

I go to the one in Aurora usually in the evenings after work. Although I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been in since I dislocated my knee. Probably two more weeks and I'll head back in.

24HR - whatever is close to where I am (except Colorado and Alameda - way too busy). Wife gets a good discount through her company.

24 HR since I travel frequently for work and they have facilities almost everywhere I go. Not the most hardcore gym atmosphere, but it gets the job done.

I also have some equipment at home that I use at times.

24 Hour Parker and quincy. The pool smells bad :(

Another one I go to when my bro talks me into it cause its near his house. East of 25 just off parker. New(er) facility and clean. Better eye candy than my gym.

24HR has the best eye candy. I go to the Lakewood one...checked out the Point, was double the price but would go if my company paid for it (like Camp's).

Rude Rec Center by Federal and Holden. The facilities are very big. No eye candy but you get some good motivation from hard core bodybuilders. The price was the first thing I liked and I can use any rec center in the city of Denver.

I go to that 24hr fitness also and have tried the smaller one off of Hampden and Tower once.

I *think* they are building a newer, larger one right off of Arapaho and Parker road!!! I'll probably check that one out after they open, hopefully during the day it wont be packed.

I work with Camp so I go to the Point too.

Place has turned into a freaking Dump. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone IMO.

I prefer 24hr Fitness.

GF and I joined Planet Fitness in February and we like it. It's supposedly a low-stress "no attitude" fitness center. They have a pretty cool 30 minute circuit that we do several times a week, gives a nice combo of upper and lower extremity workouts. They have free weights, too, but it's mostly machines. Lots of treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical machines, too. The one we joined is at Hampden and Wadsworth, since we live in Englewood it's pretty close.

I'm not there for the "eye candy" but there's somebody who works or works out there who owns a Pinzgauer! I often see it parked in front but I've never seen who owns it.

My bro mentioned that one too. Would be worth the drive it was that much nicer than mine. The pool really does stink, like sweaty garlic?

lmao, well fook I hope my mom doesn't notice the smell because I've been trying to get her to go to the gym with me for months, that'll just be one more excuse for her to not go!

As far as the newer one, i'd definitely switch to that one. It'll be just a couple minutes more out of my way but probably worth it and at 8am hopefully not too crowded.

They are supposed to be building a new huge 24 HR up at Highway 7 and I-25as well. I was told that my membership would not cover that one and it would cost more to work out there!!

I think they are trying to match LifeTime at 287 and 120th. Just another way to get more cash out of ya.

well frack! I'll have to check with my membership then. I know I have the one where you can use any facility nationwide so I assumed it would be okay, but I'll double check.

I think so far in Colorado the highest level of 24 we have is a Sport. There are two levels above that and a series of "athlete" clubs named after famous athletes. I wonder if the new one is going to be one of these higher levels? It would make sense. It's the only way to get more money out of us regulars...

Planet Fitness

They just put a new one here in Lakewood. $20/month gets you unlimited use (including tanning, massages, and a trainer) AND you can bring a guest every day for free. No start-up fee, one-year contract. Otherwise $10/month with no contract and $30 start-up fee.

I had one incident the other day though...I was grunting as I was finishing up a tough ab workout, and the lady came over to me and told me that they had a 'no grunting' rule.

It says right on the wall "judgment free zone" and she walks up to me and judges me. Oh well, for $20/I'll be happy to keep my grunts in, but I'm still irked about it.

You should have told her that she was standing in your "No Cellulite Zone.":D

That club sounds like a good deal though.

THE lady as in the owner? I've heard that some Gyms don't like the loud grunting like you see some people do on tv that are lifting weights the size of cars, lol. But I don't know why they don't allow it.

The old racket ball center in Arvada, good old fashion gym. free weights and a few machines... never busy, great monthly price. If your in the Arvada area id recommend it. It isnt any kind of "new" or high tech gym, and isnt a social hour in there, so it is perfect to go in and train.

Denver city parks/rec centers.

I used the point 23 years ago, it was a nice dump back then too but so are denver rec centers. Ya cant beat the price though, if you live in Denver.

Courthouse basement. Men's and women's locker rooms and showers (separate facilities :(); couple of treadmills, one elliptical, one stationary bike and some weights (free and 2-3 machines). Not big. Not fancy. Enough for me as a noobie to regular exercise beyond standard 12 oz. curls.

This lady is the manager. I immediately asked to speak to her manager, so she gave me his card.

I called him and told him I thought it was quite ironic that in the 'no critics' and 'judgment free' gym, one of the staff walks up to me and judges me in the middle of my workout.

He at least conceded that it was a bit ironic. When I pushed him on it he said that it was too philosophical and that he wasn't going to go there with me. I told him that I never signed anything saying that I wouldn't grunt. He said that regardless of whether I signed anything or not it was still a rule and if I don't like it I can quit and get my money back.

He actually claimed that the other members there would feel intimidated and they don't want to be the bodybuilder/throw the weights down/grunting type of gym since that would add to the no judgment atmosphere.

I'm going to stay because the facilities are top-notch and its only $20/month, and its 1 minute to both my house and my work.
But the no grunting rule is sheer bullshit. I still recommend them though, you can't beat the price, and it does have great clean facilities, and plenty of treadmills, elipticals, bikes, and weights and weight machines. I'm not going to let 2 ignoramus' ruin a good opportunity for a great price with great facilities, great hours, and great convenience.

There are a lot of gyms with a 'no grunting' policy. Bally's out in a-town (on exposition) threatened to kick me out for grunting as well.

honestly if a guy or girl grunting is intimidating perhaps the gym isn't the best place for you...? :flipoff2:

That's exactly why I lift at Pro Gym. I am a big guy. When I'm squatting 300 pounds, or throwing up 275 on the bench, I grunt. Who wouldn't? I tried Bally's and 24, and got SO tired of skinny little fellows giving me dirty looks for dropping an 80lb dumbbell after shoulder pressing. Bunch of homos.

I'm not rying to take a spinning class, Pilates or Yoga. I pick up very heavy things over and over again. That's it.

24Hour @ Lowry. Close to the house. I'll hit 24 @ Colo & Alameda, sometimes in the AM. Usually pretty empty then.

BTW: I'm looking for a work-out partner.

Gym? You don't need no stinking gym. There are a few guys on this board that can testify that a weekend out at my place will be a workout you will not soon forget. Anyone want to come out for a day or two and find out?

I normally go to the 24HR at Colorado and Yale at lunch. But today I am going to swim, so off to the busy meat market I go (Alameda and Colorado). Nice talent in there though. And walking around Target after is nice too. :)
