View Full Version : My crappy day....
Frank Z
April 9th, 2008, 11:20 AM
I go out to start the van this morning so i can get to my first service call. Battery was dead because I left my GPS plugged in for a little bit too long...cheap azz battery. Jump started it and let it run for 10-15 minutes while I gathered up the rest of my crap that I carry in my pockets. I get in the van and pull out of the driveway. less than two blocks away the motors stops so I coast from 10 miles per hour to a stop and smoke starts pouring out from under the hood. I killed the ignition and pop the hood latch. This took all of 5 seconds at the most. By the time I got to the front of the van theres melted burning rubber dripping to the ground. I opened the side doors to grab my extinguisher and I couldn't see it immediately. Then I remembered that I was carrying my Oxygen/Acetylene set in the back of the van. I immediately got it out of the van and dropped it a safe distance away. While all of this is going on I'm on the cell with 911 telling them that my van is on fire and desperately trying to keep the stupid rubber-neckers away from the van. A little advice for you looky-loo's....if you see a burning vehicle and you aren't planning on helping....STAY THE FOOK AWAY!!
The fire department shows up and puts the fire out. No obvious cause indicated. Here's what it looks like as of 30 minutes ago. A complete loss. No it will not buff out.

Insurance...liability only. I dropped the full coverage to try to keep my costs down. Everyone else is jacking there's up as a result of the cost of gas and passing the price increases on to the customer. I was doing everything possible to keep my overhead low....and now I'm screwed.
Guess I'll need to call the shop and have a "Rush" put on my XJ parts....it's going to have to become my service van for a while.

OHh man Im really sorry to hear that. Man I wonder what caused the fire. Once I jump started a vehicle and it did the same thing, well not as bad, but the rubber started melting off the cables and tons of smoke came out.
Good luck !!!

Frank if you need to put a hitch on the car you can use my utility trailer for as long as you need to so u can still work.
also we can put some plywood and 2x4's on the trailer to inclose it some so your stuff would be out of site on it.

Did the fire get to the interior at all or did it stop at the firewall? If we could find a donor vehicle, I bet we could fix it. I've worked on worse.
Frank Z
April 9th, 2008, 02:54 PM
Tom,
The fire made it through the firewall. There were flames coming through the ducts. The entire HVAC housing in the engine bay is gone. The entire harness in the engine bay is a mass of melted insulation and copper. The Radiator, A/C Condensor, and tranny cooler are shot. The alternator and power steering pump are toasty. The plastic intake manifold beyond repair. I have no idea how to descride the intake and filter....Ashes comes to mind.
I'm really overwhelmed with the outpouring of offers to help fix the van, with my XJ motor, and with the offers of loaner vehicles.
Got something in my eyes and a a lump in my throat.....

That, Ladies and Germs, is why the van is beyond reasonable repair.

Did you overcharge the battery and cause it to explode?
I've had two separate engine fires and neither of them burned fast enough that the whole front end went up instantaneously. I had plenty of time to break out the extinguisher and put them out with only minimal damage, but they were both on 70?s vintage vehicles with lots of metal under the hood. Maybe it burned so fast because of all the plastic and rubber that modern engines have.
It looks like you?ve already got plenty of vehicles lined up. I?ve got a ?75 IH pickup sitting around that you could use for a while, but I?d have to get it registered first.
Frank Z
April 10th, 2008, 08:15 AM
No I just jumped the van. As soon as it started the cables came off. The battery did not explode. When I went back to the van with my neighbor to tow it back to my house I had to turn the key to unlock the steering wheel and put the tranny in neutral. As soon as I turned the key to the ON position the seatbelt light and buzzer came on. Even with all the damage there was still a current path in the melted wiring. I disconnected the battery before doing anything else, I didn't want a repeat visit from the FD. Shifting out of Park had to be done from under the van since the shifter cable was melted.

Sorry to hear about your van. I know how it is to lose your service vehicle. 2 years ago one of our employees totaled one of our vans literally 2 months before it would have been paid off. It not only totaled the van it took out the truckmounted carpet cleaning machine inside too. Fortunatly insurance covered it but we were almost am onth without a van. Now we have a much bigger payment on a newer box van.
At any rate does your van have the sliding side door or the double barn doors on the side. I need one of those barn doors if you have it. Let me know what you want for it. If you do have the barn doors you either have to cut the metal around the hinges to get it off or pop the door pin. I think its easier to cut the metal. Some reason they "superglued" the hinges on instead of bolting them to he body like normal.
