View Full Version : Sod After Juniper

I just ripped out 8 gigantic juniper bushes that were eating up my already smallish back yard.

Are there any big, known issues with planting sod after juniper? Those bushes dropped a TON of debris over about 10 years and I'm wondering if that will somehow screw up the soil.

That said, I do plan on removing all the rock and debris that's there now, down to bare dirt. Then I may have to backfill with a bit of soil to grade. So maybe it won't be that big a deal??

[SIDE Q: Now I have a fair amount of landscaping stone mixed with ~10 years worth of juniper deadfall. I'd just distribute the stones around my house but I don't want the juniper junk and twigs in it. Any cool way to separate the two?]

You will need to amend the soil, the junipers make it acidic.

Was afraid of that. Recommendations?

Former issue: juniper debris kills soil, highly acid or something. Remove and replace good for regrowth.

Latter issue : Make a screen with shop cloth... that will fit over a wheel barrow. U-shaped frame of 2x4's that fits sides and "handle side" of barrow, nail/staple shop cloth to frame. Shovel mixed crap onto screen, shovel rocks off.

You can add crushed coral to your topsoil that will help with the acidity.
