View Full Version : What To Do When the Boss Says Sell the Bike?

The Boss (wife) has been after me for a while to sell the Hayabusa. It started 3 years ago when we had a child. It has gotten progressively more ?in my face? about getting rid of the bike.
I love HAVING the bike. But really in the last three years, I would guess that I have ridden it 10-15 times tops. I doubt I have ridden 500 miles in the last three years. (the Hayabusa is a ?99 (unrestricted) with around 8000 miles). So I don?t really NEED the bike. It sits in the garage. But somehow, selling the bike makes me feel like an old guy. Besides every once in a while I need that feeling of acceleration.
So what do I do? Give in or keep showing her who wears the pants (I sure the hell hope she isn?t reading this)!!??
To make matters even worse, I am thinking of relocating to where I can really use the thing on the Autobahns. I mentioned that if we decide to move, that the bike would be shipped there. Whoa. No speed limit. Hayabusa. No speed limit. Child. No speed limit. Wife who doesn?t like the bike. No speed limit. Dense Urban traffic. I think she tends to see even more of a problem with the bike in Germany than here. I mentioned taking the bike. That didn?t go well and we had to discuss who wears the pants.
So what does one do when the boss doesn?t like the bike anymore???
My other thought is get rid of all the older toys that I have had for a while and condense into one new car that 1) goes pretty fast 2) gets good mileage and 3) parts can be found in Europe 4) new enough to be very reliable 5) safe and 6) be legal for use in Europe. I want something that does at least 160mph. Maybe getting rid of the bike is on the cards?.still makes me feel old?.

Sell it all, go to Germany, buy a nice BMW or Mercedes. Have it converted to American standards before you bring it back. Problem solved.
Now if it was a cruiser, I'd tell her to pound sound. :D

You answered your own question right there. Sell it and move on.

This same situation came up with me getting a street bike. I got out of Jeepn'..sold everything and had enough money to buy either 2 quads or 1 quad and a Triumph 675 (God, I love that bike). She told me to get what I want, but she preferred that I got a dirt whatever. That was the end of it. I could have gotten the street bike, no issues at all. I respect my wife, and I know why she wanted me to stay on the dirt. So I got two quads. I know me...and you sound a lot like me...speed is a rush. Your wife most likely knows this about you. Now that you are married and have a family, things should change...people are relying on you now. I find myself doing the same thing now...I don't hit the jumps like I used too, don't corner like I used too and definitely don't speed like I did.
My wife really doesn't ride her atv much..so really I have a YZ-450F and a YFZ-450. Sure would like to ride the 675 thou....

I'm married and have my second kid on the way. My wife encouraged me to get my CBR last summer. Now she is supporting my wishes to run it at the bonneville salt flats this fall.....I'm goin to buy her some flowers!!
Of course she drives a new Impala SS. If you're going to get a new car, it has been a great family car that scoots right along. 300 ponies and around 28mpg

Very good points. I've owned several street bikes, but will never own or ride one again. Why? Years ago, when we lived in Longmont and our kids were little, I was riding home from Denver with a buddy. We got off I-25 at the first Longmont exit and turned west to head home. He was in front of me by 20 or 30 yards. We both had full leathers and full helmets on and were obeying all laws. A woman pulled out from a gas station just west of I-25 right into his path. I got stopped in time but there was nothing he could do. I saw it all happen and watched him die before the ambulance arrived. I sold my street bike right after that and have not been on one since. It easily could have been me leaving a wife and two little kids behind, all because of something I didn't really need to do.
I still ride dirt bikes, but like Chris, I'm a bit smarter now and don't push as hard as I could. That day years ago is still etched in my memory like it happened yesterday and it changed my outlook on things...

You know I find this thread interesting. My Ex was so very anti motorcycle that it was painful. I continued to ride none the less. My motorcycle is my passion. It is my life, it is how I get away from the grind of life. I basically met my current wife on the bike, and most of our first dates included long rides in the mountains. We started taking long weekend rides of up to 8-900 miles a day and love to ride together. Then I had a pretty good accident a few years ago. I spooked me pretty bad. I was not going replace the bike at that point. My wife talked me into buying a new bike, I don't ride as much as I used to, and I try to avoid riding at night, but I still ride, and we still ride together. I would not get rid of my street bike, but that is just me.
Now, dirt bikes are another story. A couple of years ago, we all got dirtbikes, but I have learned that I am not as young as I used to be, and can not ride like I used to be able to. therefore, we are all going to sell our dirtbikes when I get home because they just hurt too much now a days.
