View Full Version : Help open OGG?

I just talked to the BLM to see if they would say when they will open OCG. The lady said she was just out there, and there is one 25' by 2-2 1/2' deep drift in the road, and she is worried people will try to go around it and damage the fence. I was thinking if we could get people willing to shovel it out, maybe we could get her to open it tomorrow, but I want to make sure there are people willing to do it before I call her back and suggest it.

well I just by OCG about 1 hr ago. This BS I suggested a couple of weeks ago if we co4x4 could just take a back hoe out to OCG. It could already been plowed and opened. The rest of the road is bone dry, and it looks as if it has been for awhile. AS of right now a back hoe could be done in about an hour or so.   Also I agree about the excusees! When OCG was first closed not to many folks said anything or offered help. Arm chair helpers:shrug:

Probably too late now as you won't be able to talk to anyone at the office, though if it gets cleared of snow, it will probably open as soon as you let them know.

Bummer... That's a long drive and alot of work if I can't even run the trail after I clear the road. :(

My understanding is the road has to dry out first, since there is so much snow melt. But feel free to call and double check, so they know that more than 3-4 folks use this trail.

I'd love to come help, but its over 2.5 hours from me. Long way to shovel some snow

I dare say you'd do less damage, and exert less effort, to simply drive over 25' of a 2.5' deep drift.

And whose to say that there isn't a bigger drift somewhere along the trail. What are you going to do then? Shovel that out too?

The lady who is in charge of opening the trail, was worried about someone damaging the fence because of the snow. I talked to her today. She said nothing about mud or drying out, just that it would open when the snow is gone. My idea was that if we had people who wanted to run it, and shovel it, I would have called her to see if she would open it that day so that it could be run as soon as it was cleared, but it didn't happen. I don't think she gives a crap about snow on the trail itself.
If she wouldn't have opened it that day, then I would have said screw it, but I didn't want to ask her if no one was going to help.

Is it really that bad to just wait? Yea, it sucks that it is closed but it's not like it's the only trail in Colorado and our rigs will all blow up and all off roading will end forever if it's not open by Sunday.

Take a pill and let the sun work it's magic. If you can't wait then grab a shovel and have at it.

When you are done with that maybe you will all come out to MSV and start clearing snow off that one too so it can open earlier than expected.

Oh wait, we can start another thread where everyone can post up their favorite trail and then everyone can go around and clear snow every weekend until July.

Ok I?m done, sorry about that.

Whats up Jim?
Ryan here. (your old Safeway buddy from Evergreen)
I appreciate you taking the time to investigate and post up the conditions and status of OCG. I'm also glad you take an active stand in trail control and maintenance.
I always look forward to your trip reports, and respect your ever growing admiration in continuing to keep our trails open.
Thank you.
Anyway, do you know if the Four Mile Recreation Area is opened up, or does it even close? Specifically the south side from Mushroom Gulch to the Arkansas. I'm very curious as to the snow amounts in the hills to the east of Buena Vista.

soo...??? what's the consensus? i'd be willing to help and make sure we can have the OFR next weekend, but fawk if that's not a grip of miles to drive if a) no one else is gonna help, and b) it doesn't do anything to help open the trail.

Hey Ryan. I would imagine those trails are open. I don't remember any gates on them. I know back when OCG was first closed in Feb, there wasn't a ton of snow down towards Salida. (I drove through from Pueblo to Pagosa) I think the OCG problem was more drifting than anything else, so I don't think the treed areas were as bad. Hell, I've got nothing better to do today, maybe I'll drive down there, shovel OCG myself and run some of those other trails.

Ok, I went down and shoveled until my shovel was getting too f-ed up. Guess I should have brought a pick or rock bar as it is all ice, not much snow. I could see how if someone went across it, how they very well might slide into the ditch at least if not the fence. After that I went down by Ruby Mountain and drove 300 for a ways, breaking snow as no one had been on it after a while, but I stopped at the top of the hill, somewhere before Arnold Gulch as it was solid snow from the top, down the hill, and looked too deep for me. After that I went a ways and up a hill and beat on rocks for a while, then carried about 30 lbs back down, so I am very beat. I will post some pics later in the trip report section.

Given my motto "give the hardest job to the laziest guy and he will find the easiest way to do it"........We used to take the used laser toner and shake it out over the snow banks. The black absorbs the heat from the sun and it will melt in short order. It doesn't hurt the environment or anything.

and only an hour and a half notice from 1st to 2nd post? had someone said, hey next friday or saturday, you might get some people together, or try and get something worked out in the OFR2 thread. I'd be willing to help but being trash talked by certain people in this thread has probably cost some people their motivation.

I have not trash talked anyone, and it has been much longer than 1.5 hrs since OCG closed.

Steve
April 6th, 2008, 10:07 AM
I think he was referring to the time between the OP and your post calling everyone "arm chair helpers." It was more than 1.5 hours but it was insulting everyone here. Check your attitude at the door and you might find more help.

Not intended as an insult, based on how everyone on here has responed to each other, I would not have thought anyone would have been insulted. Sorry.

April 6th, 2008, 01:20 PM
Well, I don't mean to insult anyone, but I wonder how many people would have showed up to run it if it had opened on Sat, and you got the same notice. I bet it would have been more.

I am patiently waiting for the snow to melt, just like every other year I have lived here. A couple more weeks is not a big deal. Sometimes it takes longer. Be glad it's not Georgia pass or Redcone. Patience, kids!

Very true. It just sucks to have so few trails open, and have one that you can't run only because of the access road, though who knows, it may be impassible further up anyway. Guess there's always Moab.
Well, back to being frustrated with fixing my steering.....
Oh, BTW, if anyone lost a house key, says Defiant, I found it on the access road.

I'm sure it's possible, but since it's ice, it will be a bit more work than just shoveling snow.
