I was THINKING of looking for a used Triumph speed or street triple. From what I've read they seem like good bikes, but... Has anyone ridden one? What would be a reasonable asking price for a stock bike? School me!

A good asking price depends on the year, mileage, condition and exact model so giving you a price isnt going to help you much in this case. Check kbb.com for a good estimate.
The Speed Triples are great bikes though! Plenty of power to keep you entertained and they are very smooth and easy to ride. Being a full liter bike, they still dont make as much power as todays jap inline 4's but their still plenty of performance to be had from them and they are VERY torquey. Their good looking too for a naked bike...my only knock on them is the stupid looking bug eyed headlights. Looks like a retarded fly coming down the road or something!

I had an 05 Triumph Sprint St. The 1050 I-3 was a great engine and I loved that bike. I sold it, but still long for it while riding the zx-14. Just like everyone above said, not a noob bike by any means, but if your looking for a great in town bike with unlimited hooligan potential, there are a few bikes that can match it.

Well like I said I was looking, looking for a bike to commute with when gas hits 5 bucks a gallon (thats enough reason to buy a bike to me, and I understand economics. I can buy lot's of gas for the price of the bike but it sounds like a good reason and I have to sell this idea to mamma too.) I showed my girl a pic of one and she said NO! There's no place for me to ride. So we got to looking on craigslist. I voted for the 71 triumph bonnie, and she liked the 02 indian. There was a cool bsa bobber project and she was looking at fat boys! (ha ha, the bike!) Damnit! We have two different thoughts going on here. Now what!?!

Take it from the guy with the triumph tatoo on his arm,, you dont want to bother with an older english scoot,, UNLESS, you like to ride 30 miles, and then wrench for 30 minutes, No Im not joking.. I know this cause I was big into them when I was younger, and much more patient. They are wonderful machines to tinker with, but were built to be ridden on a very small island, and just dont do worth a damn on the open roads here:D
Indian is out of business (again) so you may want to shy away from them as well, tho most of the newer ones are just S&S harley clones anyway..

Last time we heard those rumors, it was 20 years before it actually happened, so dont hold your breath.. Im sure they will be ressurected, but just like the old indians, dont expect any factory support of any older models.

Oh yea one more thing. Sport bikes are out of the question, that's the most uncomfortable thing ever! Especially when you have someone with you on the back! Ouch!

Didn't know if you're still considering these or not, but I thought I'd post my initial thoughts. I decided to get a Speed Triple and found an 07 demo FS at Foothills BMW that needed to be mine.
Seating position is much more upright then any sportbike I've owned. The short wheel makes for a quick turning flickable machine even with a liter plus engine. Still may be a bit cramped for 2 up riding, but if you're just rolling around town, certainly tolerable. I don't have to worry about it, my SO has her own bike so I removed the passenger pegs from mine.

What a great bike. I know I'm going to get myself in trouble on this machine before the end of the summer :D

The speed triple is a bada$$ bike, i really like the "naked'' Look and the short wheel base as mentioned is makes for a killer in town bike and a good stunter if your into that. From what i hear and have seen in the magz the little brother street triple is another good choice with the 675 inline 3 cylinder. Would love to ride either one.

My friend and I rented a Speed Triple and a TT in Switzerland. He had the Triple and I was on the TT. They had their version of the Autobahn and I smoked him on the open sections but his was more comfortable around town.
We loved em both.

Ha! Yeah, I must have been lucky. I had a '78 Triumph Bonneville that was very reliable. IIRC, had to get Whitworth wrenches, which was a PITA. I'd buy a new Triumph in a heartbeat, but I really like this also.
