Man Found Guilty of Faking Army Career
March 27, 2008
Richmond Times - Dispatch
ROANOKE -- A Roanoke man faces up to 35 years in prison after a federal
jury found him guilty of fabricating an Army career that supposedly included
combat missions across the globe.
Randall Moneymaker, 44, claimed he had been on active duty since the
early 1980s, serving as a Ranger in hot spots such as Grenada, Panama,
Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.
He used his bogus status as a wounded soldier to obtain more than $18,000
in military disability payments and a job as a recruiter for the Army's Active
Guard Reserve in Roanoke, according to prosecutors.
In U.S. District Court in Roanoke on Monday, a jury convicted Moneymaker
of six counts: five counts of making false statements on forms he filled out
to obtain disability and retirement benefits; and one count of theft of
government property.
He also faces a fine of more than $1.5 million.
According to documents introduced during Moneymaker's trial, he served in
the Reserves in 1981 and 1982 and in the Army from 1983 to 1985. He was
given a general discharge under honorable conditions, a discharge slightly
below an honorable discharge.
In 2004, he joined the Active Guard Reserve and became a recruiter. At
trial, he contended he had been a Ranger before taking that job but that
the Army had lost his records.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Jacobsen presented jurors with documents
that showed that, during the time Moneymaker said he was overseas on
combat missions, he was in the United States working civilian jobs.
A sentencing date has not yet been set.

As a disabled veteran it chaps my ass too, but is it really a crime that merits a 35 year prison sentence and $1.5 million fine? I don't think so.

He's a Ranger. Give him a weapon a chute and the opportunity for a HALO drop into an hot zone. If he makes the pickup, sentencing complete

Kind of like the lady that started the big fire here in Colorado getting fined 14.5 million. Do they think they'll ever collect?

Well, he was a Ranger, Maybe we should send him "Back" to Ranger School. I am sure the Black hat's would love to allow him to prove his metal. If he makes it through Ranger School, I say we send him immediatly to the Q course (Special Forces Qualifications). I know those guys would love to have him try out for the team. No need to waste out money on prison time. If he graduates the Q course, then he is free to go WITHOUT his fake benefits.

I have to agree here... 1.5 million fine that will never get a penny paid, and 35 years of imprisonment that I have to pay for?
I've seen convicted multiple-murderers get off with much, much less.

When it gets down to it, what this guy did was scam the Government out of some money. If you ignore the particular details of how he did it, is it really any worse than a woman who invents a few fake kids to get extra welfare, or someone who cheats on their taxes? They all lied to bilk the Government out of some cash.
I understand it's currently fashionable to be rabidly supportive of soldiers, and I do have a great amount of respect for someone who would willingly put themselves in harms way to protect others, but if you take the emotionally charged methods of his scam out of the picture, this crime would merit no special attention.
Personally I think someone who scams an old lady out of her life savings and ruins the rest of her life is much, much more despicable.

I agree with Jake's post and most of the others. He pulled a scam on the government and deserves everything that he gets.

Jake, I'm just as pissed about this douche bag's crime as his method.
I don't just support the troops. I was one for 25 years. His crime is a personal afront to me and hopefully every other service veteran.
