On a normal, lower than normal snow year, it usually doesn't open until mid-late June. Unless we get a lot of hot weather, it will probably open later than that.

I drive by Empire every weekend on my way to winter park to board, and from the snow that is in town, I would say you won't even make it past the 2 maybe 3rd switch back. We won't make it to the lake like jimfoo said till mid June maybe. Mid May you might be able to make it to Fall River Res if you just want to reach a high altitude lake, but even that is a long shot right now.

Exactly!

(I guess I didn't realize how high Bill Moore is since it's so close to Denver. Never really thought about it.

Last year--from http://www.bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen_2007.htm:

6/10/07 - Tried from two different trails (West from inside the gate and East up the switchbacks on the right). Got to within .9 miles of the lake at 11500 ft with ~5' of snow.

7/7/07 - The Trail is open all the way to the Lake. There is still snow at the end of the trail, but it does not cross the road.

Yeah, unfortunately this time of the year, and this year in particular, you don't have much choice in trails, scenic or not.
