So you want to know where Generation Y came from ?

In its January 22, 2008 edition, the Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil had a
topic about generations by age group.

Generations are grouped as follows:

- The Silent generation, people born before 1945.

- The Baby Boomers, people born between 1945 and 1961

- Generation X, people born between 1962 and 1976

- Generation Y, people born between 1977 and 1989

For the last one, one can ask why Y?...

A caricaturist explains it eloquently below...

I'm a Y'er, and I hate hip hop and have never worn my pants low. So your statement is an incorrect generalization.

Besides, X and Y are no worse than the Baby Boomers.

I think the joke got serious.

Silent Generation 1925 - 1942 61 - 78 Adaptive
Baby Boomers 1943 - 1960 43 - 60 Idealists
Thirteenth (Gen. X) 1961 - 1981 22 - 42 Reactive
Millennial (Gen. Y) 1982 - ? 13 - 21 Civic

http://www.aia.org/nwsltr_pm.cfm?pagename=pm_a_20030801_genx

But I also believe the Gangsters/thug/pimp/get rich or die trying to (even if you have to deal or kill) trend is not one that can bring much good to a community.

No, you don't. But then those are awfully broad categories and you can find lots of people who don't fit any of the molds. I've interviewed enough recent college grads to know it's generally true but not always. And yeah, I've had people show up for a job interview in torn jeans and flip flops. They don't work here. ;)

I'm a Gen Y as well, I'd be interested to hear from the other successful Gen Y's what they think made them successful. I'm 23, have a house, a wife, three cars as well, three businesses (two of them multinationals), have been working since I was 14, put myself and two girlfriends through ivy league colleges by working as many jobs as I could, and by continually getting promoted above people twice my age, for superior work ethic, and accomplishing it all without a single handout (although I will openly admit I had a family that desperately wanted to give me help and money when they could, despite the fact I would never take it.) blah blah blah blah, I didn't mean this post to be a "I'm so great" post or any crap like that. I've got loads of faults and problems as we all do, and I am quite far from perfect.

My reason for writing this is frankly I'm astounded by most of the people my age. I don't get how they seem imprinted with the deep set sense of entitlement. How so many of them think they not only are entitled to a job (or house, or spouse, or car, or... well the list goes on), but that they are entitled to the best.

I asked an 18 year old who I was tutoring through his finals, "what do you want to do after high school, what do you want to be." He looked at me like I was asking a stupid question... "I'm going to be rich, I'm going to start a business." I asked, "Well what will your business do, what innovations have you come up with?" He says, "It will be an internet company." I asked, "Do you know anything about computers, or any programming languages?" He said, "No, but I can outsource all that to India..." I just stood there halfway between wanting to strangle him or his parents... This is our future? This is what this country has to look forward to filling it's work force?

Or even better when I was a manager of a convenience store back in Boston, and I was listening to this kid talk to his friend about how screwed he was because he didn't have a job and his parents were telling him they weren't going to pay for his apartment any more. He was about 19 and had told his friend earlier in the conversation things that lead me to believe strongly he had never had a job, and had been turned down by most of the places he had applied. I told him, "Hey I could always use a night shift cashier." He said, "work as a cashier? Do you have anything in Management? I want to make at least $15 an hour..."

I know where I got my work ethic. I watched my father come to this country (legally by the way) with nothing but the clothes on his back, and I watched him go from sweeping floors in the local print shop, to being vice president of the largest printing company in the world. I watched him live the "American Dream".... It inspired me to do so as well... I look around me now, and I see the vast majority of Gen Y kids need a lesson in the American Dream. I honestly fault their parents and the investment system in this country. The ones that prospered in the 80's invested, made their money through playing the markets, through selling their homes, through creative lending and borrowing, through credit debt, instead of working. What did these kids have to witness. Sure, alot of the boomers worked for that money, but their kids didn't see that. Their kids saw the investment of it, which has lead these kids to believe that the money just comes, that the opportunity just comes. I hope for one reason or another, that some day my kids will have to worry about whether they are going to eat tonight or not, nothing drives the point home further then, "sorry kids dad had a product rejected at work, we'll be having oatmeal until next week." That's how you learn that nothing is every given, and it all must be worked for.

What inspired you other Successful Gen Y'ers, let get some ideas we can possibly spread across this country before the chinese get their act together and decide letting this country believe it's still number one has gone out of style.

I'll wear whatever I want to wear to work because I'm the boss. Yes I did start at the bottom and I WORKED my way to the top. Infact I am the top.

Also the real reason Gen X will not be better off than our parents is because of what will/has been left for us to fix. Thanks greedy boomers(GW and cohorts). It's time to stop giving us cake and time to make us eat our veggies.

BTW Steve I do not clump you in w/ the greedy boomers. If in fact your fall into the boomer generation.

I own three business'. I began in 95' working for similiar business. I worked hard, didn't complain, and did whatever it took to get 'er done. They brought me in as a partner in 96'. We dissolved the partnership in 99' and I became sole owner. I then went on to open two more stores. One in 04' and one in 06'.
I was the absolute bottom of the totem pole when I started. I had nothing but a desire to work hard and succeed. I was foturnate to be in a small organization and boss' that recognized my contributions and had the confidence in me to give me an opportunity. I took that opportunity and ran with. I have not had a boss, except for the wife and kids, since 99'.
