Had this all typed out, and fawkin lost it. Weak.
Anyways. Pam and I have been talking about this for a while, and have been planning it for a while. Pam's dad came back from Rapid City with us yesterday and is going to be doing a lot of the work that I just don't have the patience or attention to detail to do.
The kitchen was your typical uber-plain Richmond Homes kitchen, white laminate countertops, cheap linoleum, and cheap white appliances. We already changed out all of the appliances, a guy I know got me a great deal ;) . Tonight we moved everything out of the kitchen so John could get started tomorrow. All of the linoleum (entryway, kitchen, and bathroom/laundry room) is getting replaced with tile. The coloring of the tile actually kinda reminds me of the color scheme here a little bit. We're keeping the cabinets as I do like the color of them and they're in good shape (house built in 97). We're sticking with laminate for the countertops, don't think our house needs anything nicer. The color is "Butterrum Granite," really cool looking color that has some texture to it and should look really good.
The real work starts tomorrow!
Here's a before pic, I'll update as we make progress.

Recessed cans, hanging pendants over the island, halogen undercabinet lighting, rope lighting above cabinets, appliance garage, microwave above range. If going with ceramic / stone floor tile, EZ Heat with programable thermostat.

We're going to redo the light fixture over the island, add some undercounter lights, and probably add something at the top of cabinets, but that's about it.

Tile's almost done, the grout's going down today. Ho Depot is being rather typical in their lackluster service with the countertops, so that is probably going to delay things a little bit. According to the receipt I have until they close tonight to cancel, and I'm tempted to do it. They originally told Pam less than two weeks, now they're saying at least a month, and won't return our phone calls.

Dam your kitchen looks almost exactly like the one in the house me and the fiance just bought and moved into. Lay out and everything. Wouldn't mind upgrading it, but that will depend on how long til we can afford it. Not going to upgrade if the money isn't there til right before we decide to move elsewhere :)
Looking forward to pics and updates on cost and time for this work.

I wish my kitchen looked as good as yours before the upgrade! :p

The kitchen was extra clean those days, and those pics are over two years old. One pic was from an appraisal, and I forget why we took the other one. But the linoleum is destroyed, and the counters are just plain ugly. We're hoping it makes our house "stand out" a little when we put it on the market next year.

Dave you can't use "minor" in the same sentence with "kitchen remodel." :D

We are about finished our kitchen remodel(along with the pantry, living room, family room and garage). Unplanned demo started Dec. 28th @ 8pm when a pipe burst, and as of today the only thing left is the Silestone countertop. Kitchens may be the hardest room to remodel, but you will get the MOST satisfaction out of it when its done. Good luck with the project.

Ho Depot says we should see our countertops next week, so as long as that ends up staying true, it'll work out nicely.

I know you've got one hiding in there somewhere (I've heard it!)...but where's your microwave?
One cool thing would be to install a larger counter onto your island and add a couple of barstools. People love to hang out in the kitchen and you have room for it.

Microwave's to the left of the fridge tucked in that corner. I had thought about changing up the island some and putting some stools there, but when we pull the table out from the wall when we have more people over it would really cut down on walking space through there. That's definitely on the "in the next house" list though!

Ah yes the dreaded kitchen remodel. Gut and redue. That brings back memories.

At least you have more time then I did. I had 3 days to gut and reinstall everything new and have a working kitchen by Sunday night before kids came home.
Lets see some progress pictures Dave.

I helped a friend do a "minor" kitchen up date once. Once we got the cabinets off we noticed everything was wired wrong/ old. So we ended up taking out all the drywall and re wiring most of the kitchen, with some help from some one with more experience. When it was all done he had a new kitchen, floors, walls, counter tops. The only thing that we did not change was the appliances. Good luck with your kitchen.

I like it when you tear things apart and find out how out of plumb things are.
Your kitchen didn't look bad before, just a little plain. It's amazing what a little color and texture will do!
Here's what my tiny kitchen remodel looks like:

so painting a wall adding a big lizard & putting more clutter on your counter tops & top of your cabinets is considered a remodel?
:D

Exactly. :D Clutter is the texture you need...
I thought about that as soon as I posted it. Ok, not the best pics. New floor, new countertops, new light fixtures, new sink, new faucet, paint, a huge wall lizard AND extra clutter.
In any case, Big Dave I like what you're doing and I hope it turns out how you want it to!

Looking good. I did mine a couple years ago. But it wasn't minor in any way. Had to take down a couple walls. The kitchen was so small it was almost unusable.

Got the big stuff out of the way! Still need to do some light fixtures and the undercabinet lights, but the tile and counters are done! Oh, and change the outlet on the island to something not white.
