A preemptive :flipoff2: just in case

So a couple months ago I was at a friends house and she asked me if I could get her old Honda Spree going. It's a 49cc from like 1987, but as far as she knows it works fine but needs a tuneup and tires. Turns out she doesn't have a key to it and I need that to get under the seat for some of the electrical bits. There is no title, license plate or registration (as far as I'm aware, might be under the seat) so how do I go about getting a key cut for this? When I got a key made for my motorcycle I had to give the locksmith my title. Are they going to give me trouble for this?

Also, all the info I got from the CDOT website was for cars and motorcycles. Does anyone know the steps I need to take to get this legal to drive on city streets? From what I understand, 49cc scooters are pretty much exempt from everything, but do I need plates? Insurance? Eye protection?

For those of you that help, thanks. For those of you that give me shit, well I guess I'm asking for it :flipoff2:

You know what they say about scooters and fat girls... they are both fun to ride till your friends see you on one.

How do I register my Moped?

The applicant must present to the Registration Section or an authorized moped agent:

* A DR2579 Application for Motorized Bicycle

* and Manufacturers Statement of Origin - MSO

* or Bill of Sale

* or An affidavit stating legal ownership and date of purchase signed under penalty of perjury or notarized

and

The appropriate registration fee to:

* Authorized motorized bicycle dealer
* State Registration Section

Department of Revenue
* Registration Section Denver CO 80261-0016 The Affidavit of Cylinder Capacity is required when the motorized bicycle DOES NOT have operable pedals.

Sorry can't help much on the key thing, maybe source a spare with keys and then drill the old one out? You can buy generic ignitions at auto parts stores so that shouldn't be a problem. I don't have a title for mine (2004 Kymco People), not sure if they even require them - they do have VIN numbers, though. I doubt a locksmith would hassle you.

For 49cc and under, you should register it (BTW, it's referred to as a "motorized bicycle" by the state), it's only $5.25 for three years. No plates or bike license needed, but you need a valid driver's license and eye protection. You are allowed to use bike lanes when available (though sometimes the middle of the lane is safer so other vehicles see you) and can park at any bike rack. You can't drive on sidewalks or other paths though!

Yeah, at times I do ride around, thinking, "Hey, I'm that guy, aren't I?" But then one day I pulled up to the pump and the lady in the Suburban behind me is bitching about the price of gas. I turned to her and said, "Tell me about it! This is the first time I've ever put four bucks in!" :flipoff2: I don't think she appreciated that. Don't worry about what other people think - just hop on and start grinning. :D

how about an old 2 stroke - are those still allowed on the streets?

I have an old Puch moped (it has the pedals too) that is a 2 stroke. I have to mix the oil in with the gas.

I guess I just don't get the sit-down position part of it. They could just as easily build a traditional straddle the seat style motorcycle with a smaller engine and get the same gas milage, or maybe even better with some good fairings. Why do you have to look wee-taw-did to get the benefits?

They do. They're hella popluar in Europe, but as far as I know the only one they sell here is the Aprilla RS50. I'd LOVE to have one and I'm sure if I ever reproduce and my spawn wants to learn to ride, that would be a great starter bike. http://www.motorbike-search-engine.co.uk/2006_bikes/rs50.jpg

Of course, the appeal for me is this thing was free.
