Hi all,
I am going to a family reunion near Glenwood Springs in early June '08. I would like some advice on some local trails (ie use Glenwood as home base and do day trips from there). Interested in some moderate trails and some scenery. Equipment: 97 TJ; BFGMT 33's; lockers F/R; winch. Can anyone give me some guidance on where to search for maps of the area etc. Thanks!

Battlement Mesa isn't too far from Glenwood, but I wouldn't recomend running it in June unless you really like mosquitos and West Nile Virus.

we have a lot of snow up here this year, and things are going to be awhile before they are runable, try some of the trails west of Glenwood.

x2, even last year with nominal snowfall, mid-June was the earliest you could cross Schofield, Pearl or Taylor to Crested Butte.

You might be able to try Red Rock Rim and trails north/west of Glenwood

How much snow is at the top of Transfer Trail? I haven't been up there yet this year.

the signs on the rds to taylor pass/richmond ridge area above aspen are under the snow, some are even dug out, and they are like 1-2 ft below the snow level, i would think anything above 6000ft is done for quite some time, we went snow wheeling up to ridgemond the other night on the snow cat rd, and i was amazed at the amount of snow, the cut walls on the rd were higher than a full size rig

Here are a couple of resources you can check out:

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/snotel/Colorado/colorado.html

Even if Transfer Trail melts off it will take a while for the silt to dry out, and when its wet it's like grease.

Thanks for all the info. Wow....I wasn't even thinking about all the snow you guys had this year.

Yeah, it'll melt... eventually. If it's still too wet around Glenwood, Buena Vista an Grand Junction will dry out sooner and aren't too far away.

How about Rifle? We used to party at an area we called the Rez and JQS. That doesn't have snow on it does it? The Book Cliffs probably do but I'm talking about the lower area.

the rez is a little muddy from the run off but not bad at all and jqs three weeks ago was a mud fest but should be drying up now. not really wheeling in my sense of the word but i take my dogs out there to run and TRY to find a rock big enough to flex my jeep .

tthe res is the naval oil shale reserve that is right around the corner from me and jqs is a road that kinda runs into the same area. jqs though will run all the way north to about meeker but has lots of side trails and stuff on it. not much as far as wheeling other than trail riding.
