um - guys

this isn't really Boulder deal exclusively- (actually may be a state deal). Just about everywhere I have lived it is illegal to dye your pet's hair - doesn't mean that people don't do it, but the ASPCA was pretty rabbid about this back in the 80's and got most all states to put laws on the books concerning it. Check your local laws, I'd wager most all counties have the same law, possibly worded differently, on their books unless it is on the state books.

It is just wrong. I say fry her.

City code violation. Not in the Criminal code for the State. I wouldn't doubt that there is something in the Argricultural code though. Unlikely to cover dogs though.

Totally serious here. Silly hair cuts on a dog are bad enough for their self esteem. This is just going WAY TOO FAR. I can't believe the dog has not been removed from this terrible situation. Where is the ASPCA, PETA, The Humain society, NAACP, USPCA, USDA, AARP, NAFTA, OPEC, etc on this one. Is there no humanity left in this country.

There's no doubt that this is a stupid woman, and it drives me nuts to see what people do with their pets (fancy hair cuts, dyes, clothes, etc.). I feel bad for the dogs.

HOWEVER, it's her own flippin' business to be stupid, and we don't need laws regulating that. What about the people there in Boulder - can they dye their hair? Of couse, people can dye their hair, but they can't dye the hair of their dogs . . . .

Budman is it really you? With all due respect Budman it is a fu fu dog that would probably freak out if it didn't get dyed/stained. The dog is not being hurt in any way and the owner is trying to bring breast cancer awareness. People dye their hair all the time. A poodles hair is different from other dogs hair and needs to be cut. It's not like they are taking a rot and shaving him and painting him pink. I really don't think the dog knows the difference as to self esteem.
If it's OK to dye our  green then it should be OK to stain a poodle pink

So, is it illegal in Boulder for parents to let their minor children get their hair dyed pink, or do they figure that animals deserve more protection than kids?

Way to slam a joke down to the ground... That post kinda reminds me of one time that I was driving down the highway at a fairly high rate of speed in a Ford Probe. A flock of birds took off and flew right in front of me. They barely missed the windshield, shooting right over the top of the car. One of them was in the wrong place - he hit the radio antenna on the back fender. The antenna wrapped around him, and slammed him down into the pavement. His 3rd dimension was revoked - he was a flat bird. But - at least he wasn't pink.

So then if they got out would the owner sorry other companion still get a ticket for lets say dog at large? Since the pet is only a companion it has the right to do what it wants, If we don't own them we are not responsible for there actions.

The only time I thought it was funny to dye a dog's fur was one girl that had a black dog with a white belly. She dyed skunk stripes on his back.

I laughed.

The only clothing I ever put on a dog was a bandana around a brown dog's neck because he liked to hide in the woods - the red bandana made it easier to spot him.

Our friends have a JRT. We used to have a collie with the exact same coloring. Those two would run off onto a snow covered hillside, and they'd look like one of those paintings with the indians on horseback hiding in plain sight.

edit: I just remembered giving him a bath in tomatoe juice after he messed with a skunk. He did seem to be down in the dumps and get picked on more at the dog park until the pink color faded... There might be something to this Boulder law after all. :)

What can I say, I was feeling froggy... I just find it sad when a dog is subjected to the embarassment of being foo foo'd up. Yes I own a 70 lb Poodle, but I do not allow him to be foo foo'd. At the most he gets a bandanna with race cars, or flames on it. My girls tried to put one on him with little green frogs. I quickly made that one disdappear. If you are going to tell me what I can eat, drink, or where I can smoke, I get to tell you how to treat your dog. To me causing a dog mental anguish by making thier hair pink is no different than kicking it every day when you come through the door. It is still abuse.

That's weird. Are you saying you live some place where most residents are very normal and grounded, yet still has a mostly undeserved negative reputation? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this.

No no, Aspen is a horrible place to live, you would hate it, PLEASE do not move there and corrupt it with your lib ignorance.

Years ago, when I was sitting on Barry Goldwater's couch, I was admiring a decorative pillow, which seemed to capture a very patriotic sentiment. It flew a painstakingly needlepointed message, "Tie a yellow ribbon on it," below which the artist had depicted a yellow ribbon tied onto a tree limb. It wasn't until I looked at it a little closer that I realized that it wasn't a branch that secured the yellow bow, but rather a certain member of the male anatomy.

I had become accustomed to the idea that was a pretty brazen boner. I mean, until you called me a liberal and totally blew the curve.

Hugs,
Bob

.

I honesty didn't know a dog could be embarassed by it's hair color. I thought they were unaware of their physical appearance (hence why you see chihuahua's talking chit to dobermans). I'm not condoning the color alteration thing, I mean Jeebus, let the dog be it's own dog. But I can't honestly defend my opinion by saying the dog would be "embarassed". If dogs could be embarassed you would see suicide amongst them. Like hairless chihuahuas. We'd have doggie suicide hotlines.

Operator: "Doggie suicide hotline"...
Caller: "Woof woof woof...woof." (Translation: I'm ugly and the scottish terrier on the other side of the fence won't stop making fun of me....I'M DONE!! Good bye cruel world!)

You don't have this though. That's why they openly lick their butt holes in front of everyone, and shamelessly pass gas whenever they feel like it.

IMHO of course.

ZappBranigan
March 12th, 2008, 11:41 AM
If I can interrupt the Boulder-bashing for just a moment ;) isn't this really just an animal cruelty issue? For whatever reason the city council has determined that dye on animals is cruel.

Of course, the defendant here is arguing that her dye is not cruel. While that's a persuasive argument, it's sometimes important for the law to draw bright lines. Rather than have to get into the chemical analysis of every kind of dye a person might use on an animal, the Boulder city council has decided that it's easier to just have one rule, saying you can't dye animals, period.

Now, if this person wants to challenge the law and get it changed, fine, but until that time the law is the law. And I know nobody here is in favor of cruelty to animals...

(except maybe cats.) :P
