Hi Gang,
I am part of another online community, which I feel could benefit greatly by moving from a listserv-type email format to a UBB-type board. I like the features afforded by UBB, and ultimately it would be a boon to the community.
I realize that Co4x4's traffic would far exceed the amount that this board would receive, so please be aware that I'm not looking for an apples-apples cost comparison with co4x4.
However, I am looking for a realistic cost-of-ownership estimate for a board that has perhaps 1000 members, perhaps 20 posts a day, and would be run not-for-profit. As much detail into all aspects of this would be appreciated - at this point, it is just a twinkle in my probably very myopic eye.
Thanks for all input
Bob

We used phpBB on MallCrawlin for a while too, it was free and worked for a while. Eventually made the upgrade to vbulletin (what Eric uses here).
When MallCrawlin was at the stage you're anticipating it was costing me roughly $10-20 a month to run the site.

I just set up a site for a client using SMF, its free and very feature rich. It mimics vB a lot in the admin area and user interface.

NOOOO Ubb is just outdated. If you are going to pay for a software/forum package pay for Vbulletin.
Ubb - $199
Vbulletin $160
The backend of Vbulletin is much better for member management.

This is excellent advice, yo. Each of the posts here has great feedback, and I'm really lucky to have your advice!!! Now I guess I have to trim down the options and figure out which one would be best.... as well as decide if this is something I'll be undertaking at all. :)
Matt, this is not for douchelaroux.com, but it IS hilarious. What's even better is to read Josh's email, and then youtube "banned superbowl godaddy".

Also lemme know if you're interested - I've set up a few of the free, open source ones (as well as researched ones for our company). Most are retardedly easy to get going and can handle a decent amount of traffic and users. The main point is that something basic like a Lunarpages.com basic account will give you plenty of MySQL and disk space to run the forum, but you'll get pinched on the CPU usage and might have to transition to a dedicated virtual server (or even dedicated physical one).
