This is very similar to the way spammers get information about you. They send you an e-mail with html in it, and then wait for you to open the e-mail. As soon as you open the e-mail, they know they have a valid e-mail address to send even more spam to, the same way this guy is tracking people who open his e-mail.

Long story short, for security sake, never view any e-mail in html format if you can help it. Set your e-mail software to view documents as text only!
