View Full Version : Adventures in tuning - Inadvertently "warchalked" South Boulder

Tonight, I watched the last of Transporter 1 on TV, then caught the beginning of Transporter 2, and then felt the urge to get some garage time. So, I installed the new 42# Delphi injectors I received today, dialled out the Adj Fuel pressure regulator, and went out to go see what the wideband and my laptop could tell me about how she was running.
Well, I can tell you this - 11:1 lambda and 16psi gets you to 100 pretty damn quick!
I can also tell you this - when you leave your WiFi card plugged in and drive around South Boulder, you pick up some funny WiFi system names. When I got back to my home network tonight to do some "wind down surfing", my list of available networks was like 50-names strong, all from a few miles up and down US36!
Here are some of my favorites, for a variety of reasons. The point here is that about every other name was, um, poignant for one reason or another.
Phobic (security-enabled)
hideaway
Harry's Laundry
Wasteland
Lumiere
CUBuffs (unsecured)
cubuffs (secured)
JEWCASA
ACTIONTIM
Lemmiwinks (incidentally the name for the "backdoor" program into the fuel settings on a Volkswagen Auto Group vehicle)
lesbianloveshack
Animal House
GOFAST
wheeler
Lilly's Piss
boozeronnie
ballin
we killed kenny
smartass
AutoboTs
Gaand me Danda
SharklessPool
Fiddle
Matrix
It's just funny what some people name their networks.
Tomorrow, I think I'll try for 18-19 psi. :)

Good numbers, WTF on the network names though.
I'm bagged, so dont mind me.

Go for the gold, go for the glory. No less then 25psi

If you go by viking liquor and pick up "karl rove" that's my girlfriends.

What kind of car? C'mon, anything less that 30 psi is for pussies!

2.7T. I'll be maxing out at around 20 psi, I think. Stock (with K03 turbos) is 12, chipped K03's is 14, and because of the greater compressor efficiency of the K04's over the K03's, 14-15psi from the k04's can be enough to run a little lean when using k03 maps.
So, I threw some big ass injectors in last night (42 lb), dialled down the FPR to a little over 50 psi fuel pressure, and went on some runs.
I'm still running hella rich but I'm safe from detonation. I'm still bringing the mixture closer to stoich - I want to shoot for 14.0-14.5 lambda.
Mack, I'm still HELLA rich.

Can't jack that FPR down, or shorten the spray timing (preferred)?
disclaimer: I has no idea of what you're using to tune/re-map, or if you can even modify injector timing/spray on your 2.7T

Those are great names.
I'm not that creative.
Maybe I should rename mine.
Now taking suggestions...

Ok. Call me later, I need a ride in the uberwagon. :D
I'm glad I just bought some EM, looks like somebody is stepping up the arms race. :D

There are a few ways to control overal fuelling. I'm still a novice, but some of the means:
dial down FPR
control overall fuelling trims (primary fuel tweak)
and then the management software has alot of trims on accel or decel of increasing loads, that sort of stuff.
I'm not that smart on alot of the stuff, but I'm going to do some logging perhaps tomorrow night. For now, I'll keep it rich and just be a little inefficient but very safe.

Wait till you see the power gains once you lean it a bit. You're in for a very pleasant surprise.
That thing is going to rip.
FI tuning is a mystic artform to me- I'm sure it's rooted in science, but I don't know the secret handshake that gets me into the club, and few that are knowledgable are willing to openly share.

I have a book that explains it all, and it's not really that complicated in theory, lemme know if you ever want to borrow it. Putting the theory into practice can be complicated, because every car's fuel management system is different. But the theory behind it is really pretty straightforward.
And if you just drove around finding hotspots, it's called "wardriving". If you stopped to chalk the spots, then you were warchalking. Just FYI :D

I've read the book Supercharging, Turbocharging, and Nitrous Oxide Performance, and it is straightforward.
Then I got on the HP Tuners website and realized that there are a lot of nuances to consider, and the consequences of a mistake are pricey.
Anyone who successfully tunes a high performance turbo motor on their own gets big props from this enthusiast.
I would think the keys are going slowly, being cautious, and a little bit of praying the thing doesn't grenade.
Seems Trango is on the right track.

14.0-14.5 under boost = boom! You want it rich under boost, I ran the Z at ~11.7:1 AFR. If you have access to the timing map then maybe inch it up closer to 12:1, but if not then you won't be leaning it out very much from where you are now. Note that changing fuel pressure affects the entire map, and the fuel pressure should be relative to boost. If you have access to the fuel map, tune it there not with the fuel pressure regulator. Your injector duty cycle will dictate the fuel pressure (both at idle and at WOT).
Fwiw lambda = 1 at ~14.7:1 AFR, you're confusing the two terms. ;)

Oh yes thanks. :)
And really what I'm talking about (when I say rich) is that I am running rich when I'm in closed loop operation. So I need to adjust everything so that I'm sitting at about 14.0-14.5 in closed loop, and keep it, yes, 11-12 in heavy boost. Since, right now, I peg my wideband at richer than 10.0:1 when I really step on it. :)
Thanks for the brainstorming. :)

Making me drool......
I just recently picked up a pair of 08 Subi's....one an FXT, the other is the Wifey's LGT. Gonna start with some Cobb AP's and exhaust on both, and then work on mine from there. Wifey will always take more power/performance, but when I need to really start tweaking stuff, she'll tell me to get the fawk away from her ride. :D

Now you just need to get a hold of Russ' for some "tuning"...
Want to drag you guys to Lville for some Empire eating. Good times. Ping you soon, or watch as you pass me...

Did some more logging tonight... I am apparently spiking over 2000mbar which is not a super good thing for the turbos. More logging with an open laptop means...... I get back home and I have even more network names on my list of "availables". I dunno why I get such a kick out of this.
New networks:
Crazy Carl's Discount Used Yugos
waynemanor
ladies
MJisAwsome (sic)
El network de tu amigo Jose
ineedmoorhead
I guess it's because these were really never meant to be seen, so it elicits naming that is really personal and unique.
