View Full Version : straight pipes on a hemi?

a guy i work with just had to trade in his 3/4ton ctd for a 3/4ton hemi :shrug: and is now quite unhappy with the sound. he's wondering if anyone has ever taken out the muffler on their newer gas truck and just left the cat converters in? thanks for any info:beer:

I put a borla cat back on my 06 1500, I think it sounds awsome.

The last gasser I had didn't have a muffler, just a cat. It sounded good but was not obnoxiously loud. It didn't have an irritating drone at highway speeds either.

Is that all he's unhappy with?? I am amazed at a move like that. As long as I have ANYTHING to tow, I will always have a diesel tow-rig.

as for the exhaust, he could always put in a delete pipe and see how he likes it. If too loud, buy a performance muffler.

A buddy at work has a flowmaster glasspack kit he paid Bud's Muffler 450 to install. It sounds awesome and exits in front of the tires.

he's not happy about giving up the CTD, our whole crew at work drove CTD's(his WAS the fastest) until he sold out for financial reasons to buy a house

as for the exhaust, he could always put in a delete pipe and see how he likes it. If too loud, buy a performance muffler.

that's the plan for now, cut out the mufflers as a temp fix and get a dual cat back exhaust down the road. he was just wondering if 86ing the muffler's would "F" anything up

Tell him to be careful messing with the exhaust on the Hemi. He is likely to ruin the power and MGP it has. Buddy and I had identical trucks. He went with a custom exhaust, and his power/MPG went to crap.

well he's cut the muffler out and replaced it with a straight pipe over the weekend. he's noticed a small increase in power, but it's too early to tell about fuel economy. it is a bit louder than he was hoping so now he's shopping for a fair priced muffler to tide him over till he can get cat back duals.
