Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe said on Sunday the Japanese automaker will launch a diesel-powered Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV in the United States?Toyota has repeatedly hesitated to committing a diesel vehicle for the U.S. market?especially for use in larger vehicles.
?I am happy to confirm that a new clean-diesel V8 engine will be offered in both the Tundra and the Sequoia in the near future,? Watanabe told a news conference at the North American International Auto Show.
The ?near future? is likely to be next year?we think the Diesel Tundra will debut in late 2009 as a 2010 model. Toyota usually doesn?t disclose information like this unless they?re more than halfway to production. Most industry experts agree that 3 years are needed to develop and produce a new power train, so we?re reasonably sure the 2010 model will have a diesel. That will coincide with an F150 diesel launch scheduled for the same year.

Just a thought...dunnno how it will really compete against CUmmins/powersmoke/duramax tho.

all fun aside... i like the idea of a diesel tundra. personally, i think most the bigger trucks should go that route (or at least offer the option), but that's just me. any idea on how the numbers will stack against cummins/ps/duramax?

even if they had numbers they are rarely what actually comes with the final product...

Actually, I saw one on display last weekend at the National Western Stock Show... I didn't have a good opportunity to check it out closer, but it looks to be the real deal.

Of course, that could have been a 'one-off' skunkworks type of thing making the display circuit too.

that one had the 8.0L Hino turbo diesel...thats probably not gonna happen for production. the 8.0-liter Hino inline-6 engine shoehorned under the hood of this CrewMax has been built to pull a 35,000-pound commercial truck to the dump, not get your pickup truck to Home Depot. It's rated at 256 horsepower at 2,500 rpm and 745-pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. Unsurprisingly, the Tundra now uses an Eaton five-speed manual truck (a real truck) transmission, and the rear end from a Hino commercial truck.

In australia, the Land Cruisers are coming with Twin Turbo V8 diesels...those are 4.4L V8 diesels. dunno if they will use that or beef one up for the Tundra.

I found this link from the SEMA auto show. In this artical they say Exact figures aren't provided but Mr. Victor says it's close to 300-horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque - boosted from stock numbers of 220-hp and 520 lb-ft. He promises an engine life span of over 300K to 400K-miles

It looks really stupid and without a 6th gear it's about worthless to me.
I missed it at the stock show. Guess I was more concerned with the 5500 Dodge :D .

Sounds like a home run, unless Toyota tacks on a 20% premium over the competition, like they do with the Tacoma.

I found this link from the SEMA auto show. In this artical they say

That's the same 8.0 HINO that was referenced to at the stock show. Like was already said, that engine probably won't be the production engine. One-offs like that aren't required to meet current emissions standards which get tighter and tighter for diesels.

Even if they do, I still see them selling well and filling a segment that the Big 3 currently don't touch. Light duty diesel trucks.

I currently own a '03 Tundra, literally the best pickup truck in more than one respect I've ever owned, especially the high as hell resale value. I know it's no 3/4 truck, but it serves my purposes just fine.

By the time this one comes out the F150 is supposed to have a turbo diesel V6 in production too.

NO WAY!

Toyota has quite a few different turbo diesel engines all over the world. I am glad they are finally bringing it to us:D

We need more 1/2 ton trucks and SUV's with diesels. They don't have to be huge to compete with the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Just enough to tow a reasonable amount and get good mileage while unloaded. Remember this is a 1/2ton truck. If they can get the MPG's above what their big V8 does, then they are on the right track.
