Educate me: Camping w/ Tent Trailer while Treading Lightly?

We're looking at buying a small pop-up tent camper to start camping in with our 2 year old daughter. Currently we just have a family tent - but we want a few more amenities a popup will allow - (ie.furnace). So in the past we'd pull off wherever looked like a good camping spot and throw up the tent and camp. But if we buy a small pop up tent camper - what are the "rules" in regards to pulling off trail to set up camp with one of these? I don't want to be forced to use public camp grounds just because we have a small trailer. I also don't want to give up somewhat secluded camping if we buy one of these.

Any education would be helpful.

I would imagine that anywhere on trail or off trail that has designated camp spots would be acceptable, but I could be wrong!!!!

I searched around and found this - http://www.colorado4x4.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=40711 - sort of covers what I'm asking - but I assume parking yout truck and a pop up camper is just the same as throwing up a regular tent - as long as it's an "established" dispersed camp site. Correct?
