View Full Version : Going to Orlando - what's the coolest thing to see?

It isn't that simple though. I am going for a conference, so I am only going to have 1/2 of a day to see the coolest thing. Since the flight gets in at 1:40, it's too late for the really cool tours at Kennedy, so I need to find something else...

So you only have late afternoon/evening of one day? That's tough since it rules out almost all of the typical tourist stuff. We lived there for several years and I'm not sure what I'd tell someone to go see with that time limit.

Church Street:beer:

Yep, that's all I've got. Doesn't make it easy, hence my question...

Church Street:beer:

That's one option. There are a bazillion good restaurants there. You could do one part of Universal Studios (http://www.universalorlando.com/usf_index.html?s_kwcid=universal%20studios%20orlando|1049498941) in an afternoon/evening if that's something you're into. No way is any part of Disney World worth the price of admission for that short a time.

Yeah, me either. Church Street is not a bad suggestion, I guess.

So, when did you live there, Steve? I lived there from '82 to '90. First down south, just off of SOBT at Oakridge Rd; then in Altamonte Springs, very close to the I-4/436 intersection; and finally up in Lake Mary.

A reallllllly long time ago. :silly: First place we lived after we got married. I went to boot camp and then nuke school at the base in Orlando - which doesn't exist any more.

If it makes any difference, my hotel and conference are in the Lake Mary/ Heathrow area.

I used to go to Orlando about 3x a year, and I can verify: the best parts of Orlando have liquor licenses, or if you can find them, speak Cuban.

Melbourne FTW! :)

Go to the Cape and take a tour, or just go drink at margaritaville

As mentioned already, tour departures at KSC (the Cape) end before my flight arrives.

If you have a rental car you can drive over to Daytona Beach, which is pretty cool if you've never been there.

I can possibly get you a personal tour if you are so inclined

My vote would be for Daytona as well.

I dunno if Gatorland is still open. I drove by it in 06 and it was closed.

Cocoa Beach, waves and bewbers! 10 minutes from the space center. Surfboard rentals are cheap, nice break right by the pier. Cape Surf is a good shop and there is always RonJons.

Beach would be fun, especially for that, but since my (female) direct report is going to be with me, it needs to have some modicum of decency.

yeah Cocoa or Daytona Beach are going to be good bets for short term fun based in Orlando. Or there is always a nice drive down OBT (Orange Blossom Trail) pickin up hookers!!! That is the road I learned how to drive on.... talk about distractions.
If it's warm enough, there is a killer water park there called Wet n Wild, at Universal there is a Hard Rock Live usually has decent music.

If you are a fan of racing, go to Race Rock for dinner. TOns of racing memorabilia from all walks of racing. Plus decent food. its right by WnW too.

Good suggestion. Been there, it's an awesome show. Not cheap though.
