I'd be willing to bet they have surpluses of some goods and deep shortages of others. That's what you get.

I swear that everything that has happened in Venezuela since Chavez came to power has been like reading a classical, textbook refutation of socialism, price controls, command economy, and communism all in one and a classical description of how tyranny arrives to a chorus of cheers.

It fawking pains me to see that once great country going down in flames (again). I loved Venezuela when I was there but damn.

It's not too late, but time really is running out for Venezuela. Soon the harsh military crackdowns will run rampant and then it really will be a police state and there will be litte chance of salvation. Well Chavez does fancy himself a neo-Castro. Fitting he should ruin his country just like Castro did. :(

Remember too that this is VENEZUELA, a member of OPEC. They have shitloads upon shitloads of $90/bbl oil. Many times more than all of the US and many many many many times more than your favorite villain: Exxon.

So why are there shortages? Oh there will be any number of typical scapegoats, of course. But remember that all those scapegoats were there before Chavez came to power too. So what's the difference? Yeah. Chavez and his bullshit economic ideas that, if he'd bothered to briefly study recent history, have failed impressively in every place they've been attempted in every way they've been attempted.

So now we have poor oil rich Venezuela starving. Incredible!

But I will not say it is surprising. If there is one thing I've learned about economics it is this (and several renowned economists consider this nearly a unanimous opinion among economists of all stripes):
