View Full Version : Burt Chevrolet in Parker

Yesterday, I went in and bought a used car from Burt Chevrolet. I made them an offer and they came back and wanted $2000. more. I told them no way and the sales guy said " let me go back and see what I can work out".

He came back after a few minutes and said they would take my offer plus a $399 delivery and handling fee. I told him that was pure profit to them and no way would I do that. We finally agreed to split it and I signed the order form with the price of the car, the $200 delivery and handling fee, and taxes.

I went in tonight to pick up the car and this is when the fun started. I was paying cash so thought this would be quick and easy. The finance guy starts by going over all the aftermarket warranty options. I tell him politely that the car only has 7000 miles and still has factory warranty left so I would not be interested. He got sort of pissed but moved on. He then gets to the contract and has the wrong sales tax percentage. He wants me to pay the amount and get a refund from DMV. I finally convince him that I don't want to be out the money for 6 to 8 weeks, so he redoes the contract.

I start going over the numbers on the contract and there is a charge of $349 for "DataDots". I ask what are DataDots and he explains they are some microchips that help track the car if it is stolen and if not recovered, they pay me $5000. I tell him I don't need that and he says they put it on all their cars and I agreed to pay it. I tell him to lets look at the order form I signed and he instantly realizes that I did not agree to it. He looks right at me and my wife and says" this is just great. I don't make a penny off this deal"

By this time I am really pissed and tell the guy that I am sorry I pissed him off and go right out and ask for the manager. I then explain this is the worst car buying experience I have ever had and will never do business there again. As my wife and I are walking out, the finance guy is yelling at the manager that they had better never do another deal where he didn't get paid without discussing it with him first.

I guess we as consumers now need to concern ourselves with whether employees at companies we do business with are getting paid for their work. As I said, it was the worst car buying experience of my life.

Sorry for the long post, but wanted to share it so someone else might not have to go through it.

One last note, we had written the check for the wrong amount so had torn it up. The guy was so pissed, he handed us the paperwork, the car keys and the salesman was getting ready to take us to the car. I looked at my wife and told her that even though he didn't seem to care, she needed to write him a new check. He didn't even think about that we hadn't paid for the car.

Finance guys are a PITA! They will try to sell you everything, and get really pissy when you don't buy.

When I bought my Toyota in 06, I went in with a blank check loan, and the finance girl tried to get me to switch over to Toyota financing. They were going to match the interest rate I had with the blank check loan, I asked if they could beat the rate, they said no, so I stuck with the blank check loan. They then tried to sell me the extended warranty, again no. I said I am paying the agreed upon price and nothing more, so don't even bother trying. She was nice and I got my truck with no additional fees.

I understand that this is none of my business, but... You actually completed the deal??? I would have walked out after talking to the MGR, and told them to stick thier car.

There are WAY too many cars, and dealers out there for me to get anything but the best of service from every single person in the dealership.

Yeah i work at a dealer and finance mangers can be bitchy if they aren't making any money. One of ours throws a pissy fit every time he doesn't make money on the deal. Not at a customer, but at everyone that works there.

Should of walked away, seriously. But since it was a cash deal, they didnt make much of a dime off of yas.

You should have politely told the finance guy that, if indeed, he is making no money, maybe he should find another line of work. It's not your job to feed his family.

That's par for the course. My wife's aunt needed a newer used car to replace her 1986 Buick. So my FIL and I hit up the giant used car sale Spradley puts on over at the state fairgrounds. They had a ton of cars so we narrowed down the choices and then brought the Aunt out to look. Now in hindsight, we should have secured the financing beforehand, but since my wife works at a local credit union and the Aunt's credit is perfect getting the financing was going to be easy.

So she sees one she likes. The sales guy was actually pretty nice, no pressure and helpful. We we'll take it but got to run across town to get financing. We do and get her the lowest rate possible on a year old car (something like 5% iirc). We get back and the sales guy gets the paperwork going. The F&I guy swings over and starts talking to us about financing. Sorry, she's already set on that we tell him. He then asks if he can match the rate would we do the deal through him. So I drop the bomb on him with the awesome rate she got. He gives us a surprised look and says that is a good rate. But he still says he can match it lets do the deal through him. Annoyed at this point I set him straight. #1 she's already got financing, why would we want to sit around in the ag palace of the fairgrounds for another hour just to get the same rate? Sorry, no dice. She's set, just finish up the paperwork, please. He walked off a little pissy, but looking at the sales board in 3 days they had already sold close to 170 cars so I know he wasn't going home broke.

This is just wonderful. We need a 4x4 family car for the wife to drive and I am dreading the process. Stories like this don't help :tisk:

Last time I bought one was a 92 cherokee from Medved. Took me 6 hours start to finish.

That and lots of research. When we buy a new car we know before walking in exactly what we want and what we're willing to pay. We also finance through our credit union. The last one we bought (the wife's 'Stang) we test drove it late in the day and told the salesman exactly what we were willing to pay in cash. No trade, no financing. He wanted to do the back-and-forth thing with the sales manager. I stood up, said we were leaving and he should call me the next day and let me know if they'd accept our offer.

He called the next morning and said they'd take our offer. We went in, signed the paperwork and drove away. We were there less than 30 minutes each time.

When we bought my wifes Blazer from what was then Luby Chevrolet they tried to charge more for some anti theft etching garbage on the windows after I thought we had a deal. I refused to pay it and they eventually took it off. Months later I found out the hard way that the spare tire was locked on and we had no key. I called them up and they said, bring it in,we will cut it off. I drilled it out. Then I discovered that someone had clipped off the trailer wire plug at a point where I had to hard wire it. Bastages. I laughed when I saw Luby was gone. Now its Emich.

Hayes had it right, since when is it the buyers job to pay the finance guy. Go to an hourly rate and stop jacking customers around.

years ago Stevinson pulled some crap on me at financing. Threw in the window etching charge and tried to hide it. And the Alarm charge as well. I had them pull the alarm out and take the widow etching charge off.

you agree on one PRICE and they try to eeek out a few hundred more with BS charges.

When buying my wifes Hyundai, I told the sales guy, if he left the table more than once to talk to the manager, that we were walking. All I wanted was X amount for my old car and I was only going to pay X for the new car. Pretty simple math.

Check craigslist for one. We ended up buying our 4x4 grocery getter that way. We checked out the car lots for S n G's to see if we could find a better deal. Every sales guy that we told what they had to go up against price wise just kind of laughed and said, "We cant go that low.." . So the private sale was the way to go. Much happier and less stressfull.

I recommended my parents to them a few months back when my mom's WJ was totalled and she wanted another one. They were so pleased with the experience when my sister needed a new Jeep, they went through them as well.

My last dealership experience was the first one I was actually happy with, Lithia Jeep in Centennial rock.

The worst experience I ever had was with Medved and I?ll never purchase another vehicle from them.

I would have walked out on the deal, but I was buying an 2005 SSR with 7000 miles on it for what NADA shows as trade in value. Since Chevrolet quit making the SSR, there aren't a lot of them for sale. I spent some time looking for one and other than a bunch of overpriced ones on EBAY, didn't find any. If I had other choices, I would have walked in a minute.

I also sent Burt"s corporate offices a summary of last nights events and am waiting for their reply. Will post up their response if there is one.

Thats why I always deal with a private sales (mostly craigslist anymore) when I can. When i got my last car i lucked out, the guy was selling it for his father in law, even paid for it to get inspected by a Ford dealer (it was an Explorer). Took me 5 mins to give him the $$ get the title and be on my merry way.

Yup, did this very thing when we bought our '05 Trailblazer back in '05. It took two weeks from the day we test drove it to the day I signed the final piece of paper. I got exactly what I wanted and was comfortable with since we secured the financing with our state credit union with terms I was comfortable with.

I've found, even in my short time here, that terrible dealerships one day can be great the next.

Even on the same day, a dealership "empire" may have one terrible branch and one great one.

I was satisfied when I bought my 07 one-ton dodge. I went online and "built it" and sent the specs to a few dealers in town. I told them I was serious, buying in a week, and they had better get moving fast.

One dealer goofed around and never got a response back from me.
Another played along, offered me a lot of better side deals, but fell short on my truck by $1000 (sans one $100 option that costs MUCH more to add later).

A dealer across town from me found exactly what I wanted, got it fast, and offered me the best price. I bought it that very Saturday when they called and had it in. I knew they'd be within $1000 of the other place, if they could beat it at all, they'd have the sale.

I had it out with the Ford dealership down here in Pueblo. I was looking at a Fusion for my wife. Since her brother worked for Ford at the time, we got A-plan pricing. They can't wheel and deal on the cars that way. It's a set price. Anyways, they wouldn't give us crap for our trade-in, basically trying to make up for what was lost in the A-plan sale. I wasn't happy and started to walk out. I told them I was headed over to the Honda dealership to buy an Accord. The sales manager told me they didn't by "brand loyalty around here" and I wasn't a big deal if I left. :flipoff:

No F-ing wonder why Ford was losing BILLIONS last year, they can't even treat their A-plan customers correctly.

When I was looking for my WJ, I went all around Longmont and Boulder. I had a price and model in mind. I went one place in L-mont, hashed out a deal, and was in the WJ with the salesman to go over to my bank and pull the money out. Just when I was backing out of their lot, the mgr. came out and said, "so, tha'll be $14,250 total." I told him we JUST made the deal, with a handshake, for 14 flat. He said, "well, we forgot to add blah, blah, blah." I put the Jeep in park, turned it off, got out and left without a word.

I went right down the block, and found another one. I hashed this one out too, for 13 grand. Then at the very end, the salesman starts in with "how about 13,250?" I told him 13 or I'm walking out. He hems and haws for a minute, then says, "how about $13,020?" I was disgustipated at this point, so I stood up, pulled my wallet out, threw a 20 on the table, and said, "Here! Here's your dinner tonight!" Then I made him wash my new Jeep! :D

In Detroit, if you are A-Plan you get treated like royalty. When I bought my XJ it was on the Chrysler A...the saleman could not have been nicer, even added in the CD changer and alarm for me for only $100 more bucks.

F'in with A-Plan folk in Detroit could ruin your dealership...

It all depends. I'm not surprised the local ford dealer pulled that stunt with the a-plan employee price. As Tiffany said, doing that in detroit could really hurt a dealership. My Dad got the same act back in 99 when he tried to buy a Tahoe on my GMS employee discount. THe Chevy dealers in town didn't want to screw with it so he ended up going to longmont to get what he wanted with the discount. He did his homework better when he was looking for a new Trailblazer SS. He knew what he wanted (or more what he didn't want like a sunroof) (and was shooting for the gm discount again) so that meant he needed to order it. He got to talking with a sales gal at Purifoy and they couldn't have been nicer to him. They made the order and didn't goof around on F&I bs and he was completely satisfied. So much that when Mom's 02 trailblazer needed to be replaced he found another TB SS at another dealer spec'd the way he liked it, told is sales person at Purifoy where it was and they dealer traded for it. Plus they gave him what he wanted on trade for the 02. Now he's got two red SS's parked in the driveway and won't shut up about Purifoy.
