Saw this fella having a little breakfast snack.
I didn't have a tripod and did these handheld at 500mm.
I should not have had so much coffee this morning. :D
Magpie had to come in and see if there was anything left.

Probably better than i could have done handheld at 500mm with the "Bigma!" I love that lens...but holy crap it gets heavy after using it for even a very short time!

You got that right..... I usually use it on a tripod, and when it's at 500 focal camera shake is very apparent when handholding it. :D

I was contemplating selling mine for something else a while back, but the more i shoot with it, the more i love it. Its got such a wide zoom range, decent aperture range considering the focal lengths and is RAZOR sharp, that i cant part with it! Its probably my most heavily used lens. At least you get a work out swingin it around! :D

It was also a toss up for me.....the 80-400VR or the Bigma...I still haven't sold either, but am contemplating putting the 80-400 up to partially fund the new D3 that I MUST have. :D

I think it would come in useful at times, but not very often.
But I'd LOVE to have one!

It really depends on what you like to shoot most......
I like to shoot wildlife a lot, and as such I need some glass with a decent reach, of course I'd like the new 5 or 600mm Nikkor in F4, but those will set me back about 9-10K (each). :D and I would be homeless, and quite possibly deceased by Wifey for just suggesting it.
For now I have just tried to balance stuff on the lens front, and have stuff from 30mm to 1000mm. (Bigma with a 2x...and tripod)
I just need faster stuff on the longer focal lengths and something ultrawide now.

With proper ISO and good light, its a good sports\action lens too due to its great focus system. All the RC car shots on my page are done with the Bigma. 50-500mm is an INCREDIBLE range and since its about as fast as most kit lenses in the F stop area, its still plenty usable. Its very sharp, has great color and contrast, focuses fast and has nice looking bokeh. Only complaint about it is the weight.
Ive got a few portrait examples ill post later.

I have a 28-300, but maybe I should have held out for a 500
