So my rebel xt has a smudge or lint on the lens, a nice black spot/line shows on all pictures, when shooting close up it has clear crisp outline, when zooming in for a long shot it is fuzzy, is this a simple cleaning of the lens or do i need to take it to a camera shop and have someone that knows what they are doing fix it?

Sounds like you might have some junk on the sensor. While most say take it to the shop you can clean it yourself with care.
Do a google search on xt sensor cleaning and I know there is a step by step on it.

Get yourself a Giotto Rocket Blower. Put the mirror in lock up, remove the lens, point the camera torwards the ground and give it a good couple puffs of air. Put the lens back on, restart the camera and check to see if its still there.
