OK, i'm dumb.

What keeps the water from falling out of the tube? Neither tank is sealed so i'm a little stumped

That's how they keep it clean, no water.

January 8th, 2008, 11:27 PM
That is sweet! Wonder how many times through trial and error they went through to get it to work.

It works because both ends are under water. No air can get into the tube to let the water out.

For example take a cup and put it into a sink full of water. Turn it upside down and lift it out of the water. The water will stay in until the top comes all the way out.

Still don't get it.

come on guys it's only advanced physics, or atmospheric pressure or something like that...:flipoff2:

Basically, as long as air does not get into the tubes the water can't fall. Something needs to replace the water before it can vacate the tubes. It creates a sort of vacuum, holding itself in place.

Physics wasn't even an option at the college I went to.

the treadmill underneath the water keeps it from falling out. :flipoff2: Ok he's right. :)

No you use the treadmill to fill the tube. :flipoff2:

Kinda neat...but holy God that would be a nightmare to maintain!!

Just a big siphon guys, if you lowered one tank, the water would drain into it from the higher tank. I suspect they had to pump a vacume into that mess from the high point to fill it. What a mess that would be if it got an airleak tho.

You missed my joke...I have no idea what the concept behind it is...my dog has a bowl that refills itself using the same principles.:flipoff2:

Uh, we covered this concept in my 3rd grade science class. We used the same example newracer mentioned.

we need an education system overhaul if this kind of thing isn't elementary for everyone raised in this nation.

Looks expensive... Who cares about the physics, it's neat as shart!

They don't get close enough, but somewhere, they've got to have a catchement for if it leaks, because there's easily another 2 tanks worth of water ready to drain back into the main tanks, and it'd have to go somehere - hopefully not all over the floor in that fancy room.

...And I've got to echo Cresso here. What has happenned to the basic education children receive from their parents before they go off to school, much less our education system? Advanced physics my ear!

Now, if he'd found some way to also have an open tank at the top, with no locks, I'd be looking for the antigrav units.

I'll bet there's some sort of scavenging device at the highest point to remove bubbles as they accumulate. There's probably also some sort of low-flow pump between the two tanks to keep a flow going through the bridge, and probably a couple plecostomus patrolling for algae.

catfish and snails :)

Is that fresh water or salt?

I would think there would be no way to control the snails and they would over run that bridge in a matter of a year...

Maybe get one fish that's french and likes escargots?

Wow, I was kidding about the advanced physics...didn't mean to cause such an uproar.

Huh, that's pretty cool. I'm rusty on my hydrodynamics/pressure rules, but it seems to me that would simulate a greater depth range for the fish as well, right? Taking into account the total height between the tanks and the top of the square tube? Gotta be a little roomier for the fish. That's pretty cool.

The water in the tube is in negative pressure, it is above the free surface of the fish tanks. The fish swim up there, so I guess they don't mind. I wonder how it affects them?

Fish do have feelings, at least according to PETA. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/17/national/main656288.shtml) :spit:

That link screwed up my web browser 3 times. I finally got it to work and was underwhelmed. Pretty wild idea but having a regular fish tank is more hassle than it's worth to me. (been there, done that)

OK, I know how it stays full but ...
How do you set it up???

Do you fill it and flip it over real fast with ten guys??
Do you vacuum the air out of the top?
Do you...

newracer
January 9th, 2008, 11:33 PM
Probably vacuum out the top.

GarageWheeler
January 10th, 2008, 12:57 AM
I think the easiest way to fill it would be to cap the ends and fill it from the top, then seal the top, remove the caps.

I dont think it would work....

it would be too easy for it to become a siphon... especially if a fish were swimming in it... the only way I see it working is if the two tanks were separated at the top...

It *is* a siphon. It works because the fish tanks on either side are at the same level.
