OK, we can't agree on the best, how about the worst? Yeah, like that is going to happen. I picked Herbert Hoover so all you anti-Communists can pick FDR.
My worst are:
Jimmy Carter
Lyndon Johnson
Bill Clinton

I think a good case could be made for Jimmy Carter being the worst overall. On the other hand, you can point to specific things that other presidents did that were at least as bad, if not worse, than anything specific that Carter did.
In general, for instance, I think Nixon was a relatively good president. His wage and price freeze, however, was a stupid, counter-productive, and excessive intrusion by the federal government into the workings of the economy that might qualify as the single worst thing that any president did in the 20th century--even though the effects were relatively short lived. And, of course, FDR's creation of the welfare state has probably had the most and worst long-term effects; we'll probably be suffering from that for the next hundred years at least.

There is a lot more in assessing a President's worth than if "everything was good in the Country" at the time.
Carter gets a bit of a raw deal. So does Bill.

I base that on the fact that carter had no balls, not the economy of the era. He was weak, and it was known by everyone in the world.

The hostages came home alive. He chose not to start a war over it, I tend to agree.

Yeah, in the long run I'm inclined to think that GWB is going to be remembered about the way that Zachary Taylor is. That is, most people a hundred years from now will say, GW WHO???

Thought that was Carter, along with wearing sweaters and turning your thermostats down. Plus, anyone remember mortgage interest rates reaching 18% under Carter, or his famous (infamous) "malaise" speech where he chastised all of us?
He's at or near the top of the list of bad Presidents for me.

Concur. As much as the radicals of either side hate it, but Dubya and Bubba will be footnotes. Neither will have much impact on history. Dubya will be a footnote towards continued fighting in the middle east, terror, 9/11, and WMD.
Bubba will be remembered for his sex scandal as a giggle footnote in a textbook years from now, and for being 1 of 2 to ever be impeached.
NEITHER will be remembered as great presidents during serious war, nor having any serious economic impact on this country.
I reserve to change my mind on Dubya if the Patriot Act goes unchecked New Deal style.

National Speed Limit is your first complaint in ALL of the bad president thread?

More of an observation but I remember the things that have a very direct affect on my life and that did.
I looked it up and the 55 mph speed limit was enacted in 1974 by Congress and Nixon.

Carter, JFK, and FDR more for their legacies than their actual time in office.

I had several uncles that were in the CCC. If they weren't all dead I would ask their opinion of FDR.

I know the answer, but it is suprising to see how many people do not remember him for that little tid-bit.

I'm sure they'd think he was great. I just don't think that proves anything.
Actually, the CCC was probably one of his better ideas. Too bad he didn't stick to programs where people have to work, rather than just getting hand-outs.

Which president got us involved in Viet Nam?
Well, it really depends on your definition of "involved." You can go all the way back to Truman for diplomatic involvement and committing us to support the French position there. Or you could blame Eisenhower for sending in military advisors along with the diplomats. Although in general I would say it was Kennedy who escalated our involvement to the point where getting U.S. soldiers shot at became inevitable.

In a user poll on that first page, Reagan got 5th, Lincoln 7th. Wow, Americans are dumb.
X2 on the GWB disappearing into history. When people look back on the Iraq War, they'll be saying, "So what?"

Truman (he fired McArthor, and fouled up the Korean war)
Clinton (He fouled up more than I can list here)
Bush 1 (for fouling up Iraq and then some)

Which president got us involved in Viet Nam?
I'd say Kennedy too, but LBJ really escalated it and let McNamara run it like a business instead of a war. *ssholes! If they had ran it like a real war it would not have been the cluster***** that it was.
Between the mismanagement of Vietnam and "The Great Society" I'd say LBJ is at the top of my worst list.
