View Full Version : 223 ammo - local source?

Finally got my AR15 out to a range on Tuesday, and ran a couple hundred rounds through it. Had a blast, and was consistently hitting the gong at 200 yards (iron sights, no scope).
Now I need to find a good place to pick up more ammo. I have no idea what the going price is, or the best way to load up on 1000 or so rounds. There are a ton of internet sites, most of which have 'sold' out or are 'out of stock' on most plinking rounds. I just got my reminder email about the Crossroads of the West this weekend, but I seem to remember ammo prices there not being all that great*...
Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
* - I need to head out there anyway to pick up some more rounds for my 7.7 Arisaka (japanese WWII rifle). I fired about 20 rounds through it too, and was pleasantly surprised to be hitting the 200 yard gong pretty consistently. Not bad for a rifle that has not been fired much since my dad 'picked it up' on Attu.

Fill out this form https://www.goarmy.com/contact/send_for_info.jsp?hmref=cs and you should be able to get all the .223 ammo you want.

if you have to buy it local, i'd go to jensens first. sometimes jax in FC has cases of wolf, but they have a pretty high markup lately it seems.
otherwise, search around on the net and find wolf steel case with the polymer coating (not the green laquer crap, those like to glue themselves in ar-15's). Wolf military classic is the polymer, IIRC. Normally It's far cheaper than buying brass case anything, even UMC rem.

6 years too old to sign up, darn. Maybe I can forge my kids names on some documents. If I sign them up, will the army send me a couple thousand rounds as a recruitment bonus???

Another pointer toward's Jensen Arms in Loveland when you go for more ammo.
I was up there yesterday and they had a good selection for decent prices. Personally, I won't put wolf products through any of my weapons. While it may be cheaper, it's just too darn dirty.
Added 1/15/08: www.ammunitiontogo.com I just picked up 1K of 5.56 Prvi Partizan 55gr. M-193 FMJ for $329 (apparently a USGI contract). Waiting on delivery.

OK, gotta ask, what is "aim's" ??
Can't find any sites called aim dealing ammo and don't remember any acronyms for that. (I'm sure the answer will cause my forehead to flatten a little more). :D

I picked up 500 rounds (reloads) at Crossroads on Saturday. Also picked up a few 30-round mags and a basic cleaning kit. My price with tax on the reloads was about 29 cents per round. Could have bought new for a little more, but now I have some incentive to go shopping for a few more rounds ;)

thats not a terrible rate per round. what is the reload data on them?
one thing I have found... silver bear russian is pretty cheap, and cleaner than wolf. I really liked the 62gr hollow points and soft points I had from them. They were very accurate in my rifle, I didn't have any notable flyers or squibs. I was very impressed for russian cheapo crap. I WILL buy that ammo again for killin 'yotes. Especially since my new m4 is going to be chrome lined. It will clean up much better than my last one, and be more resistant to the wear of the cheap bi-metal ammo out there. Personally, It always seemed to me like rem UMC was dirtier than the east block crap. Maybe my gun just didn't get along with UMC... but it was cheap, so meh.
On a side note: I also found some badass soft points for my mosin nagant. Again, something made in Russia. I am quite impressed by how much dmg they do to my wood targets, far better than FMJ.

was purchased from Dad's Wholesale - I know he has been on the gun show circuit for a long time and has a location in the Denver Area as well, and there are a lot of good reviews of his stuff on the net. I just got their basic 223 55gr FMJ reloads, no other data.

I buy stuff from Dad's all the time for a friend that runs a gun store in Custer and deliver it when I go up there to shoot/ATV/fish, etc.

Yes. Other than some less-than-ideal Wolf ammo, their prices were all in the 50 cents per round range. lots more than the price I paid...

what .223 did you look at? russian mfg will be cheaper than usa, and usa civy could be less or more expensive than milsurp, depending on if its 55gr or 62gr, and where it was mfg. some milsurp is crazy expensive. greek, south african, etc. some is not as bad (israel, usa, etc)

I stopped by Dad's the other day to inquire about bulk 223.
1K of reloaded mix Winchester and Remington 55G FMJ were somewhere just under 300 if I recall correctly.
