I have a 06 PSD, and I don't have the cat in it. I need to get emissions in May, and I'm wondering what my options are. Is there a high flow, 4" cat that I can purchase? Is the cat inspection just a visual thing, like I've heard?

I've heard of people taking the old cat and take the shell off, and welding it to the pipe, to make it look like a cat. Some people have even put cat litter in the shell, so that if the inspector decides to kick it or something, it still sounds like a cat.

Is it worth trying these measures, or do I just weld some 4" flanges to my stock cat and swap them just for the test?

Did your truck come from the factory with a cat? My 01 didn't and it's never been an issue.

Why do something illegal and pollute more? Sorry, I have no patience for people who do that.

Because the 6.0 is sooo hard to keep cool. I'm not into polluting either, but my engine costs 10-15k replace my engine.

Besides, I can't find anyone that makes a cat that I can use with this system

Yeah, it came with one

FWIW my old 7.3 registered lower opacity without a cat than with. I had the same issue, I found one local that had already been hollowed out. I had a shop weld 4" ends on it and put it in line with the exhaust. It ran about 5% opacity without, and when I went back for a re-test with the new empty cat it registered about 8%

It passed with flying colors the first time, but failed the visual. Next time through it was fine.

Steve my curiousity about your pollutant comment is why did some come without? Even on mine, they had to look up the VIN on it to see if it was ever originally equipped with one. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dave you have a PS too right? My old one was a 97, had a cat. Dave's is 4 years newer and no cat...I can't buy the gross polluter argument from removing them

Also the cat on my Duramax(though its still on there for now) is super restrictive the way GM routed it. A replacement pipe is a straight thru 4".

No idea Jeremy. A cat doesn't just affect opacity either. My comment simply had to do with the fact that hollowing out a cat is illegal, and I don't believe doing so reduces pollutants. I'm far from an envirowhacko, but for the very minimal - if any - gain most vehicles will see from getting rid of the cat I don't understand the reason to do it.

Look on Ebay or Craigslist to get one off a 3rd gen Dodge. I have the one out of mine and it made no difference but, I won't sell it as they are ridiculous to buy new. They are high flow and 4". I don't know if all the 3rd Gen's had them or if they started in 04.5, my year truck, because it is the first 50 state legal truck from Dodge in this body.

It is just a visual inspection for now and you will need one (or some semblance of one) for the inspection. if your truck had one from the factory, you have to have one for inspection. I have seen some hi-flow cats, but they are still cats and don't flow as well as straight pipe, but they are better than a factory cat.

Different fuel systems, different ECM settings, different injectors, etc. can make it so a cat is not necessary.

Thanks, I'm glad I got some info, finally. I will look for a Dodge cat, and just swap them in a out for emissions.

Thanks again fellas

I think its two years. At least that's the way it was on my gasser.

How do you like your truck, any mods?

thiking about it i am not sure, i thought i was told 5 years, but can not find actual proof. I have gotten stickers three times and never needed emmisions(late 05, 06, and 07)
No mods for now, trying to get to the 100K mark before doing anything.
I love the truck! How about you?

I love my truck too! So far I have done a 4" turbo back exhaust, triple gauge pod, and a SCTXcal2 programmer with custom tunes from Innovative Diesel. Not planning on much more, unless it will cool my EGT's, the cooler I can keep my engine the better I will feel, and the longer my engine will last.

Maybe going to do the zoodad mod (its free), and maybe an intake, if I can find one that filters good, and flows god (there may not be such a thing).

The thing that kills diesels is heat. Cat's cause heat retention, that is why most manufactures got rid of the cat. I too gutted my cat long ago. It help my gas milage by 2 mpg. Lowered my engine temp and exhaust temp and when I did it, I would guess that it freed up 15 ponies. That IS worth it to me. Of course, I use mine for what it was intended for.
