I just got a 99 dodge ram 2500 a few months ago for a tow rig. I'm new to the diesel world and I want to get a cool down timer if thats what they are called(the thing that gkeeps your truck running until your egt's lower to a preset temp) what do you guys suggest?
thanks Randy

what do you guys suggest?
I'd suggest letting it idle for 60-90 seconds before shutting it down after it's been pulling or at any kind of speed. I wouldn't suggest spending any $$$ on a timer.
The times above are based on what I saw on the EGT gauge in the '01 Cummins I had.

Timers area great idea. I have a BD timer which works great. It's adjustable to shut off at whatever EGT you prefer. Even if I'm running around town empty and driving easy, it'll still idle for 20 seconds or so until it shuts itself down. It's cheaper to just sit in your truck and let it idle, but I like the convenience of just getting out and not worrying about it.

Kind of in the Import tuner market stuff but look for an HKS or APEXi turbo timer. They are fairly inexpensive and can save your butt in the long run.
Try these.........

Hope this helps.

this is the one I was looking at. Can you turn it on and off or is it just always on?

I had one in my 91 mr2, I think it was made by H.K.S. they are a great investment! I would even use it on cold days, start up the car, take out the key, go inside for 10 min, come back with a heated car. Didnt have to think about theft. Locked the doors and the steering colum would lock when I took the key from the ignition. Still blew up the turbo, guess I have a heavy foot!!:D Go to a import store, or on ebay.

Meh. Just look at the EGT gauge (get one if you don't have one) and shut it off once it hits 400? or lower. It only takes a few seconds usually.
Unless you are doing a hard mountain pull and shut it off immediately upon pulling it over the turbo is probably fine. These things cool off very quickly.
If you can adjust your habits to wait on the "wait to start" light, you can adjust your habits on shutdown.

The only time my EGT's have been >400* by the time my truck gets to a stop is when we're towing to Moab and we stop at the rest area on Vail Pass. But within 30-60 seconds it's <350*.

It's always on, but if you touch the brake pedal it will shut the truck off immediately. I can't imagine a scenario where I'd want it off though. When I valet park, I just mention to the guy that the truck is going to continue to run for a few moments after he turns the key off.

I might just do this but I just figured for $140 it would be cheap ins.

Turbo timers are a waste of money IMO. Like the others have said, it only takes 30-90 seconds for it to cool down lower than 400*. After you drive your diesel for a month or so, it will be second nature to you. So get a pyro gauge, and let it cool down, it will save you some green, and triple gauge pods look cool as hell

Install was a piece of cake. It tapped into the EGT probe that I had for my guages. Took about 1/2 hour start to finish.
